Balloons fill the skies over Tiverton

Date: 28th August 2012

Thousands braved the mud over the Bank Holiday weekend to attend the Tiverton Balloon Festival.

The event, held in the grounds of Petroc and Tiverton High School, consisted of a falconry display, model helicopters, live music and, of course, lots of hot air balloons.

Unfortunately, several of the balloon flights had to be cancelled due to the poor weather conditions. However, on Sunday the winds dropped and the clouds parted long enough for the balloons to take part in a dramatic mass ascent in front of the cheering crowds.

Nearly 20 hot air balloons, from all over the country, took to the skies, including three passenger-carrying balloons.
The Petroc tent proved popular over the weekend, as it housed the College’s ‘celebrity’ – Olympic torchbearer Richard Dean.

Families queued to meet him and get their photo taken with the torch, for a small donation to the Children’s Hospice South West and over the weekend Richard raised an impressive £425.

Since Richard ran through Barnstaple with the torch in May he has raised thousands of pounds for the charity, which cared for his son before he passed away.

On the Sunday evening spectators were treated to a fantastic ‘night glow’ display, where all the hot air balloons lit up to music.

Meryl Tanton, who attended the event with her family, said: “It was spectacular! All the hot air balloons looked like big light bulbs – very impressive.”
