New training programme for next generation of Olympians
Staff at Petroc are playing their part in preserving the legacy left by the Olympics, by setting up an Athlete Ambition programme for local school pupils.
Throughout the academic year, sessions will be held at Falcons Gymnastics Academy in Barnstaple for a selection of young sports enthusiasts in years 10 and 11 that are ambitious, committed and aspire to compete for their country.
The first session took place last month, and was attended by pupils from Braunton Community College, Bideford College, Kingsley School, Pilton Community College and Ilfracombe Arts College, who learnt about the discipline and focus needed to become an Olympian and took part in group training activities.
“All the pupils responded incredibly positively and seemed to really enjoy the session – we have some serious talent in North Devon,” observed Charlie Smith, a sports lecturer from Petroc who led the programme.
“There are no training costs to schools or students, as our aim is to raise the profile of sport and to get more gifted and talented youngsters involved,” he added.
Charlie Bennett, a keen runner from Pilton, said: “We’ve learnt a lot today about warming up, stretching and core stability – all things which can be applied to any number of sports.”
PE and Games lecturer, Brown Cardoo, from Kingsley School, felt it was important for his pupils to get involved: “It’s important to engage students through exercise and the programme today has given them some great tips and information to back up what they are learning on their GCSE sports course.”
“At Kingsley we’ve been using the Olympics as a talking point and we’ve noticed it refocus our pupils and give them a desire for success,” said Brown.
Future sessions are being held on December 6, March 14 and June 27 and will cover plyometrics, psychology, post stretching, injury prevention and practical skill development.
