16-18 Bursary Fund

We are pleased to be able to extend the 16-18 Bursary 2011/2012 criteria to include more learners for the new year 2012.  Please see the new criteria in bold below.

If you are planning on starting your studies in September 2012 a similar scheme is anticiapted but as yet the criteria for the funding has not been released

The 16-18 Bursary Fund is to financially assist students who are on a low income with costs incurred by attending College.  The criteria is split into 2 levels, the first level is for students being supported by parents/guardians whose household meets one of the criteria below:

  • Income Support
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Employment Support Allowance (Income Related)
  • Guarantee Element of Pension Credit
  • The maximum level of Working Tax Credit
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Child Tax Credit if it is the only benefit you receive and your annual income as assessed by the inland revenue, does not exceed £16,190.
  • A household income of below £20,810(evidenced by P60 or Tax Credit Award notice)

The second level or Enhanced Bursary is for students who are:

  • Young people in care
  • Care leavers
  • Young people in receipt of income support
  • Disabled young people in receipt of Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) who are also in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (DLA).

The intention is to assist as many learners as possible from a finite fund and also to assist students who may be classed as vulnerable with a regular payment. The Bursary can be used for payments and ‘in kind’ support including help towards transport costs and essential equipment related to courses of study.

Help available for Learners:

The following shows the kind of help available from the fund.  You should be able to get the costs for your course at your interview or from your tutor.

Transport (bus pass)
Learners who live more than 3 miles from the College are able to apply to the fund for assistance.  The learner is required to pay a contribution of £50 for the year and the fund will pay the remainder.   Learners must apply to their Local Authority for transport in the first instance and then follow the instruction given by them.  Information on transport can be found on the College website at http://www.petroc.ac.uk/student-transport/

Equipment                                                                                                                                                           Where other learners are required to have essential equipment/clothing related to their course, i.e. chef’s whites, steel top cap boots.  The fund will contribute 75% towards the full cost of the essential kit*
*in some cases the full cost may be capped

CRB checks
The fund will contribute 75% towards the costs

Material/Studio fees
The fund will contribute 75% towards the costs

Hardship

The 16-18 Bursary Fund for Non Vulnerable learners will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
If you wish the fund to assist with equipment, books or trips/residential please ensure the Guidance Centre has received confirmation from your lecturer of what is required and what is essential for your course.

The Enhanced Bursary

If you meet the criteria for the enhanced bursary you are eligible for a maximum allocation of £1,200 bursary for the full academic year.  This will be allocated pro-rata for learners who start late in the year or finish early.
Learners who meet the criteria for the Enhanced Bursary Fund may, if they wish, apply for assistance from their Bursary award towards the cost of their transport or essential course related costs (such as chef’s whites / uniforms / protective clothing and shoes / boots/ equipment etc). Any such payments made will be deducted from their main allocation and the remainder will be paid to the learner in 10 equal instalments. These instalments will be paid monthly in arrears straight into the learner’s bank account by BACs.  Students will be required to be making suitable progress on their course which the tutor will confirm on a monthly basis.

What happens next?

Once your application has been received a member of the Guidance team will assess your financial eligibility.  In most cases this can be done while you wait and you can then take your benefit evidence.  If the team is particularly busy or the application arrives by post, evidence will be returned in the post to you.  You will then need to check with the Guidance team to see when your funds will be available.  For students requiring equipment your attendance needs to be checked before funds can be released.  Therefore you will have completed at least 3 weeks before the funds will be available, in the form of a cheque, for you to collect.
Once you have completed the form you must take the evidence of your benefit or low income to either the Guidance Centre in Barnstaple or Tiverton where your application can be approved.  Without this evidence your application will not be processed and funds will not be available.
The fund is a finite amount of money and therefore will be allocated on a first come first served basis, completion of the application form does not guarantee funds. To qualify students must produce their income/benefit evidence and also have full attendance and be making satisfactory progress.
