Student Union - Barnstaple

Our vision is of NUS as a pioneering, innovative and powerful campaigning organisation: the definitive national voice of students.

We will fight barriers to education; empower students to shape both quality learning experience and the world around them, supporting influential, democratic and well-resourced students’ unions.

NUS Mission

To make a vision a reality, NUS will:

  • Promote, defend and extend the rights of students
  • Develop and champion strong students’ unions.

NUS Values

To achieve our vision and mission we believe three core values are crucial:

Equality

We believe there should be equality of opportunity for everyone to participate fully in a society that celebrates diversity

Democracy

Our policies and priorities must be student-led and students’ union-focused through building open, transparent and accessible democratic structures that increase performance and strengthen accountability.

Collectivism

Students and students’ unions are more effective when they organise together locally, nationally and internationally: unity is our strength.

Who Are We?

'I'm Holly 'Hly' Paddon. And I am your LGBT officer. My job is to promote equality throughout the campus, and be a student voice for issues on this matter.'

Holly Paddon, LGBT Officer

'I’m Will, the Student Union’s Media Officer. I’m responsible for advertising the Union’s events, be it through posters, plasma screens or Fresh FM. I’m currently studying A2s at Petroc’s Barnstaple campus and intend to go to university in September.'

Will Seymour, Media Officer

'Like all the exec I am here to represent your views and interests, specifically as the Treasurer it is my role to account the union's finances for activities like the recent clic-dance. Feel free to speak to me around college with any questions or points you wish to raise.'

Joe McCaffrey, Treasurer

'My name is Jack Hampton and I am the PSU’s Disability Officer. I am a Dyslexic student who is dedicated to the job of representing the views and opinions of my fellow student’s struggling with Disabilities and other Specific Learning Needs at Petroc. My job is to listen to, and be the voice of everyone whom I can help through my role... so don’t hesitate to contact me!'

Jack Hampton, Disability Officer

'It is my role to raise any of our student body's environmental concerns with the rest of the exec and create a strategy to combat the issues raised. This year I have been working on introducing biodegradable packaging into our catering outlets, in particular the use of polystyrene cups and burger boxes. I also wish to promote local campaigns such as the recent SAS North Devon Beach Clean Up Series which PSU took part in this November. If you have any queries regarding recycling, other environmental issues, general questions or about social events, feel free to drop me a line on FB or however else. Emma :)'

Emma Crewdson, Environmental Officer

"Hi, my name is Hannah Newman and I'm your Communications Officer. My role is to act as the executive's first line of contact. Right now I am trying to improve communication to students within the college, as thanks to last year's exec we already have pretty good external links. I am particularly looking at helping to improve the student forum, to get your ideas and concerns as students to where they can be addressed. Please feel free to contact me or the rest of the exec by dropping us an email, or posting on our facebook page."

Hannah Newman, Communications Officer

'Hey everyone, I’m Liam, and I am proud to say that I am your President! I genuinely have a good feeling about this year, and with the help of the rest of executive team around me, I am sure that we can make this year an absolutely fantastic one for all of you! I can assure you that I will push myself to the limit to ensure that everyone has a great time this year, as well as getting their opinions heard and making our already great college even better!
Don’t hesitate to get into contact with us; we have easily findable facebook and twitter accounts, which are always updated so that you can readily find out what’s going on in and around our college. We’ve got loads lined up for this year, and I know you won’t want to miss out on any of it!
Outside of my presidential duties, I am studying three A Levels, one AS, as well as doing part of a Foundation Degree! Although this sounds like a lot, I will always make sure that the student voice is accounted for, and that everyone is fairly represented: I take this role seriously, but I know how to have fun with it, too.
Thanks everyone, I hope this year will be as good for you as we plan it to be! Don’t hesitate to get in touch!'

Liam Knight, President
