What is KTP?

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) is a UK programme enabling organisations to improve their competitiveness, productivity and performance.

KTP achieves this by helping organisations to access knowledge, technology or skills from a Further Education College or University (the knowledge base).

Using the skills of a talented graduate (the KTP Associate) with academic support from Petroc, the knowledge is embedded in the organisation through a dedicated tactical or strategic project.

What are the benefits?

Part funded by Government organisations led by the Technology Strategy Board, projects can be undertaken in a wide range of areas, the benefits include:

  • Access to highly qualified people to spearhead new projects
  • Developing your business for today’s markets
  • Accessing experts who can help take your organisation forward and grow
  • Improving your performance through enhancements to processes and operations

Business performance outputs vary considerably by project but nationally the expected benefits per KTP are:

  • A significant increase in annual profits
  • The creation of three new jobs
  • An increase in skills of existing staff

How does it work?

Together we will build a business case outlining:

  • The importance of the project to the business/organisation
  • The need and challenge for academic input
  • The development opportunity for the graduate

Classic KTP (one - three years) aims to address strategic needs. Shorter KTP (10 - 40 weeks) aims to address more tactical issues.

After funding is secured, partners jointly undertake recruitment to find the best graduate associate for the project. Once appointed, the associate along with the assigned team of Petroc experts and supervisors nominated from the business, work to deliver the project outcomes creating a win win situation for all three partners.

How much will it cost?

A KTP is part funded by a Government grant with the balance of costs contributed by the business partner.
Contribution required (approximately) from the business for:

  • A Classic KTP is £18 - 20k p.a. for a small to medium size enterprise
  • A Classic KTP is £28 - 30k p.a. for a large enterprise
  • A Shorter KTP is £400 per week for a small to medium size enterprise
  • A Shorter KTP is £600 per week for a large enterprise

This contribution not only covers the services of the KTP Associate but also the time and expertise from Petroc along with the project costs such as travel, subsistence and consumables.

Am I eligible?

KTP has worked with over 3,000 organisations, from manufacturing to IT and sustainability to marketing. Any business sector, including ‘not for profit’ and public sector organisations can take part, and businesses of all sizes are eligible. All partners must be financially viable and committed to the project, with the ability to support the graduate.
