You can study your certificated course for free if...

Fees charged for all courses are shown, but if you are paying your own fees (ie not by a third party such as an employer or training organisation) you could study your course without paying the tuition fee if you fit into one of the criteria below. Please note that exam fees and supplementary fees shown will still have to be paid as they do not carry a remission. If you are in receipt of income based benefits the Learner Support Fund may be able to help towards some of your exam fees. Please enquire. (Courses that carry no fee remission will be marked NR).

You do not have to pay the tuition fee:

  • If you are studying for your first FULL Level 2 qualification (a full Level 2 qualification would be five GCSEs of at least a grade C or a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 2), have not previously attained a full level 3 qualification and are aged 19 or over.
  • If you are studying for your first FULL Level 3 qualification (a full Level 3 qualification would be an NVQ at Level 3, National Diploma or two A Levels), have not previously attained a full level 3 qualification and are aged 19 to 24 years.
  • If you are studying a basic skills qualification such as literacy or numeracy. You can study an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course for free if you are in receipt of an income based benefit (as below).
  • If you are in receipt of an income based benefit such as those below:
  1. Those in receipt of income based benefits, formerly known as means tested benefits. The main categories are: income based or contribution based Jobseeker’s Allowance; Housing/Council Tax Benefit; Income Support; Working Tax Credit with a household income of less than £15,276, income related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).
  2. Those in receipt of Pension Credits (Guarantee Credit only) producing an award notice.
  3. The unwaged dependants (as defined by Jobcentre Plus) of those listed above.
  4. Offenders who are serving their sentence in the community.
  5. Those taking learning aims that are funded as basic skills, excluding English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
  6. Eligible asylum seekers in receipt of the equivalent of income based benefits (assistance under the terms of the 1999 Immigration and Asylum Act) and their dependants.
  7. Certain learners participating in Learning Skills Council funded projects where identified in the project specification.

EVIDENCE WILL HAVE TO BE PRODUCED AT THE TIME OF ENROLMENT. WE REGRET THAT PHOTOCOPIES OF AN AWARD NOTICE ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. IF AN AWARD NOTICE IS LOST THE RELEVANT PROVIDER OF THE AWARD NOTICE SHOULD BE CONTACTED FOR A DUPLICATE.

Courses that carry no fee remission will be marked NR. Courses as indicated 18+/19+ are only available for learners aged 18/19 years and over respectively. Courses marked L2 or L3 indicate that the course is offered free to those studying either their first FULL Level 2 or Level 3 qualification, subject to terms and conditions.

So when might you have to pay ?

If you don’t qualify for one of the free categories as mentioned, then the fee shown is only approximately 50% of the total cost as the remaining 50% is funded by the Government. If the course fee is above £175 you can pay it to the College in instalments. There is also additional help for you if you are in receipt of a low household income but do not meet the above criteria. You can also take out a Career Development Loan for a part time or full time vocational course and there may be an Adult Learning Grant of up to £30 a week available for those on a low income (not on a means tested income) if studying full time, on their first, full Level 2/3 qualification. Please contact either Barnstaple: The Guidance Centre on 01271 338125 or Tiverton: The Hub on 01884 235330 for more details. Students from outside the EEA countries will be expected to pay overseas rates.

So what is to stop me? Nothing! For further advice about your personal situation, please contact either Barnstaple: The Guidance Centre on 01271 338125 or Tiverton: The Guidance Centre on 01884 235330.
