Next Steps South West is a collaborative project across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset and comprises 14 partners, all Higher Education Institutions. The project’s objective is to engage with young people, 13 – 19 from identified target postcodes where research indicates that there are high percentages of young people with the ability to progress into Higher Education but low numbers of young people doing so. The project uses a range of careers resources and external provision to raise aspirations and enable young people to make informed decisions about their future. We are currently working in local identified target schools as follows; Uffculme School, Great Torrington, Bideford College, Pilton Community College, Ilfracombe Academy, Tiverton High School, Park Community School and Cullompton Community College.
Next Steps South West has worked with students at Petroc to provide inspirational speakers, Masterclasses and impartial information events to give students all the relevant information that they need to be confident in applying for higher education courses.
NSSW at Petroc was pleased to provide the ITAE group Prepare a Doctor day in both academic years 2018/19 and 2019/20. This is where students get the opportunity to experience what it will be like to work on patients and gives the students an advanced insight into human anatomy and pathology.
Next Steps South West has a definitive end date of July 2021, where the Outreach Hub will take over the work that has been done. The Outreach Hub will be a point of contact for teachers, students and parents to continue to get impartial information about higher education. Further updates to follow.
