90 credit level 3 BTEC diploma in Public Services (Careers Learning Pilot)

Level 3
Course Code:
North Devon Campus
One year

This free qualification will be taught one day a week over one year for 19+ learners. The course gives students a good insight to a range of issues affecting the Public Services, and allows students to apply their learning to real world situations. The qualification is equivalent to 1.5 A-levels and attracts UCAS points. Students could progress from this course to the FdA Public Services.

As part of the one year Careers Learning Pilot project, Petroc can offer this course for no tuition fee; the usual cost is £4150 for 19+ learners.

The programme covers eight separate topics aimed at adult learners.
The topics covered include Government, Policies and the Public Services, Teamwork & Leadership in the Public Services, Citizenship, Equality & Diversity, Crime & its Effects, and Planning for Emergencies.
Assessments are carried out in a variety of ways - most will be typed documents but some will be practical tasks. Practical tasks are adaptable to ensure inclusion for all participants. There will not be any exams.

As part of the course you will need to complete up to 30 pieces of coursework, out of college time.
As the programme is coursework-based it is essential that you have a reasonable understanding of ICT. Regular access to a computer is recommended.

Due to the nature of assessments it is advisable that applicants have good levels of literacy, ideally GCSE grade C/4, but other grades will be considered.

An interest in the modules is essential, as is a willingness to learn.

If you are a mature learner life experience is also taken into consideration.
This is a stand-alone qualification in its own right and will develop your understanding of the sector. The course can be continued to a second year resulting in an Extended Diploma (giving a total of 3 A-levels), however there may be fees incurred for any continued training.

For those looking to further their education successful candidates may be considered for the Public Services Foundation Degree at Petroc.
