This programme seeks to develop the skills already gained at Level 1. It provides the practical skills and knowledge required to successfully embark upon a progression route in college or a career in the construction industry as a bricklayer.

The focus for this course is improving on and learning new practical skills and underpinning knowledge allowing you to progress in the construction industry. Units include: building methods and construction technology, working drawings and setting out basic masonry structures, thin joint masonry and timber frame construction, solid walling, isolated and attached piers and cavity walling foundations and vernacular cavity walling. You may be offered additional qualifications which will be discussed during induction week.

All aspects of the course will be studied through both classroom based theory sessions and practical based workshop sessions. You will have the opportunity to develop your Maths and English skills if you have not achieved a GCSE 4 in these areas, you will also learn to develop the business skills needed to become a successful bricklayer.
You will be advised of the dates when work should be submitted. You will be assessed on your theory and practical project work throughout the course.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths and English at grade 3 or above.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 2 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.
Towards the end of your course, your personal tutor will discuss possible progression routes with you. These may include other programmes of study within architecture and construction, Apprenticeships or progression to the Level 3 Diploma in Trowel Occupations.
The course will be delivered at the Petroc Brannams Campus, Barnstaple. Practical sessions will be taught in our fully equipped trowel occupations workshop.

Q: Is there any equipment needed to participate on this course?
A: Safety clothing including boots and overalls need to be purchased by the student. Students are also required to provide their own stationery and textbooks, a full equipment list will be provided at interview.

Q: Are there any costs for this course?
A: Students are asked to pay a contribution towards materials and learning resources used in workshops and classrooms. There may also be trips throughout the year which may incur a cost. If your are a 19+ learner there may be course fees, unless you are eligible for a remission. Financial support may be available, if you require further information contact the guidance centre on 01271 338125.
