The Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying is ideal for learners with no prior experience who would like to start their career in construction. Learn basic bricklaying skills and study theory alongside. The course is designed to help candidates learn, develop and practice the skills required for employment in the industry and career progression.

Units covered in this programme include the following: safe working practices, information, quantities and communication, building methods and construction technology, basic block-laying and bricklaying skills, basic cavity walling, setting out and building basic masonry structures up to damp course level. These units will be studied through both classroom based theory sessions and practical workshop sessions.

As part of this study programme you will also undertake maths & English (if you have not achieved a Grade 4 at GCSE in these subjects), work experience, enrichment and tutorial.
You will be advised of the dates when work should be submitted. You will be assessed on both your theory and practical project work.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 2 or equivalent or above, preferably including Maths and English.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 3 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 1 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.
Following this course you can progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying or you could also seek employment in the construction industry and undertake further study through the apprenticeship route.
The course will be delivered at the Petroc Brannams Campus, practical sessions will be taught in our fully equipped trowel occupations workshop.

Q: Do I need any equipment?
A: Students are required to purchase their own safety boots, access to workshops is not permitted without them. Students are also required to provide their own stationery and textbooks. Equipment can be discussed fully at interview and a kit list will be sent out prior to the start of the course.

Q: Are there any costs for this course?
A: Students are asked to pay a contribution towards educational visits. If you are 19+ there will also be course fees, unless you are eligible for financial support, details of which are available from the Guidance Centre team.
