Foundation Diploma-Extended Diploma in Business - Level 3 - Full-time (North Devon)
Level 3 Vocational
North Devon Campus
One/two years - see course overview for details
Do you delight in all things business? Then equip yourself with the broad range of business skills this study programme offers.
The Foundation Diploma is a standalone one-year programme, and if successful, you can carry forward the units to a second year and complete the Extended Diploma. BTECs embody a fundamentally learner-centred approach to the curriculum.
You will explore specialist areas within business such as finance, marketing, event management, international business, HR and principles of management. You will explore businesses and their structure and also look at the decision-making process. Practical elements include work experience and enterprise skills. There will also be an opportunity to pitch new business ideas.
In the first year, this diploma offers an introduction to business-related topics covering the following core areas:
- Exploring Business
- Personal & Business Finance
- Developing a Marketing Campaign
- Managing an Event.
There will also be two relevant optional units.
You will take part in an enterprise challenge and organising an event which is designed to improve your entrepreneurial skills. The qualification includes an exciting work experience placement during your first year. Year one is a standalone qualification equivalent to one and a half A-levels.
If you are successful and decide to (and are approved to) continue for a second year, you will explore more specialist areas such as:
- International Business
- Principles of Management
- Business Decision Making
You will also study four relevant optional units such as Recruitment and Selection and Employment Law. Assessment is a mixture of coursework, mini projects, externally-set tasks and exams.
The programme employs a variety of assessment techniques. These can range from word processed reports to role play, work experience placement, discussions, interviews, presentations and external assessments. Recording equipment is also provided as a means of generating assessment evidence.
To be accepted onto a two-year Level 3 programme, all entrants must hold at least a grade 4 in GCSE Maths and a grade 4 in GCSE English, as well as at least three other GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above. Certain subjects require a minimum of GCSE grade 6.
If you have grade 4 (or below) in English and Maths, you will need to have a strong grade profile of 4/5s and above in other GCSE subjects. Your entry qualifications will be discussed at interview and reviewed on your introductory day.
Relevant Level 2 core study programme at Merit. (Those with a higher level of academic content)
Employers will find this qualification valuable because the business skills you will gain are relevant both to the public and private sectors.
Students who complete this course could go on to teaching, law, sales, event management, banking, retail management, accountancy, administration and marketing occupations. You can also consider progression onto higher apprenticeships or degrees.
This programme will help support employment with management opportunities.
The BTEC business programmes take place in newly refurbished rooms, offering students the opportunity to learn in a vibrant and inviting environment. Students also have access to IT suites, chrome books and laptops to help them conduct research and complete coursework.
On your first day, you are expected to bring your GCSE results, a pen, A4 paper/pad, a folder and a USB memory stick.
