This Higher Apprenticeship is designed to support workers at a higher level in order that they can meet service and delivery demands and lead/manage the workforce. Higher Apprentices will be working as managers of staff and/or services in general residential and non-residential settings.
Delivered 100% in the workplace.
With this course, the components are a combined Diploma of the competency and knowledge with Functional skills at level 2 to include Maths and English. These are all delivered 100% in the workplace.
The course is made up of both mandatory and optional units. Optional units will specifically relate to your care setting and chosen to fit in with your care setting.
Topics covered in the mandatory unit group include:
- Promoting professional development
- Championing equality, diversity and inclusion
- Safeguarding and protection of vulnerable adults
- Recruitment and selection
- Lead person-centred practice
The optional units include topics like:
- Managing physical resources
- Understanding how to manage a team
- Managing domiciliary services
- Leading the management of transitions
- Developing provision for family support
- Supporting individuals at the end of life
- Supporting individuals with multiple conditions and/or disabilities
This is not a full list and there are plenty more options available.
Functional skills are the skills that we need in our lives and at work. They develop our skills in maths, English and ICT, but also focus on teaching us how to apply these skills in everyday contexts and situations.
For example, there is more emphasis on problem-solving in functional skills, and supporting learners in applying and transferring those skills in everyday situations.
Work based learners are well-placed to engage with functional skills as applying problem solving in everyday contexts is at the heart of the qualifications. This is exactly what our learners have learned to do in their lives.
This qualification is assessed in the workplace through completion of a portfolio of evidence which will be internally assessed and internally quality assured, you will need to demonstrate what you've learned using both practical and knowledge assessments and a mixture of online testing.
Higher Apprentices will be working as managers of staff and or services in general residential, non-residential or nursing home settings with a high level of knowledge of care provision activities. you will need to be employed for 30 hours per week or more and ideally already hold GCSE's Grade A - C or equivalent and be able to provide copies of the certificates.
There were 1.75 million paid jobs in adult social care in England in 2009. The sector is steadily expected to grow its number of employees, needing a minimum of 2 million workers by 2025, giving apprentices great potential for a career in a growing sector. The majority of these roles are at operational level, for which the Intermediate and Advanced level Apprenticeship framework is suitable.
Higher Apprentices may progress from this programme onto further qualifications specific to their work context. A wide range of qualifications are available for use within the social care sector. Typical job titles applicable to a Higher Apprentice may include:
- Care Broker
- Care Manager
- Unit Manager
- Line Manager
- Residential Manager/Warden
As this qualification is delivered in the workplace you will be assigned a personal tutor who will require access to yourself for assessments, but also a quiet area that can be used for theory sessions. As a student of the college you will also have full access to the college facilities.
Any requirements for your first session will be discussed with you, by either a member of the enrolment team or your tutor on their initial contact.

Q: Do I have to be a manager to do this course?
A: You must have managerial responsibilities to be able to show competence
Q: Is there a Level 5 for care?
A: Yes it is now the Advanced Practice pathway
Q: What happens if I leave my employer?
A: If you move employer to a similar role and your new employer is happy for you to continue with the course, then we will move with you.
Q: Is there a maximum break allowed between employers?
A: Yes, you need to be re-employed and back in work within 6 weeks.
Q: What happens if I fail my Maths and English?
A: Your tutor will spend a little more time with you, before you re-sit them.
Q: When I choose my units, are they set in stone?
A: The mandatory units are fixed, but the optional units can be changed should the need arrive as long as the reason why has been recorded for audit purposes and you have enough time to be able to complete the unit.
Q: Is the Diploma available not as an apprenticeship?
A: Yes, the Diploma is available by the means of other funding methods. Please contact us for more information.
