This course is an ideal introduction to the world of health and social care for students who hold 4 GCSEs at grade E/2 or equivalent or above, preferably including Maths and English Language.

Understand the values which underpin the health and social care setting.


This programme comprises a health and social care qualification and GCSE resits or Functional Skills in English and Mathematics. The modules included in this programme include:
- Working with children and young people
- Communication skills
- Equality and diversity
- Meeting the needs of users of health and social care services.

This is a one year full-time Level 1 programme for individuals who are interested in finding out about the work in the health and social care sector. Progression to a Level 2 course is possible for those who complete and pass all aspects of this course.

At the end of the one-year programme all learners are expected to have achieved GCSE Maths and GCSE English Language at grade 4, or show that they have been working towards improving their previous grade.
The health and social care component of this programme is assessed through coursework. This is a mixture of class activities, presentations and written tasks. English and Mathematics are assessed by an exam.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 2 or equivalent or above, preferably including Maths and English.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 3 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 1 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.
Upon completion you can progress onto a Level 2 programme and various careers within the industry.
Lessons take place in classrooms which are equipped with the latest whiteboard technology. The college has its own computer system and one part of this is called the VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) which you can access from both college and home (if you have an Internet connection). Staff put teaching resources and assignments on the VLE so you can save them to your memory stick to help you with your assignments. Practical sessions take place off site in the local area which is within walking distance of the college.
You will need to bring proof of your exam results and your DBS certificate showing no criminal convictions or cautions - or proof that you have started to apply for one. You will also need classroom equipment such as pens, a notebook as well as food and a drink or money to buy these.
