If you are interested in a career supporting children in a school environment, this Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools offers an engaging programme that puts you on exactly the right track.
This course leads towards classroom roles such as Teaching Assistant and Learning Support Assistant.
This programme includes marked knowledge units as well as competency-based units to reflect your role in supporting pupils' learning. Studying this qualification can lead to classroom roles that directly support teaching and learning, e.g. teaching assistant and learning support assistant.
The programme is made up of ten mandatory units plus one additional optional unit, combining both knowledge and competency. It relates directly to the National Occupational Standards (NOS) in supporting teaching and learning in schools.
A Petroc assessor will visit intermittently in order to plan, observe and assess progress in placement, and to check competence within the practice based units. The course tutor will assess assignment work within the knowledge elements of the programme.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths and English at grade 3 or above.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 2 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.
Must be aged 17 or over at the start of September. A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 3 or above, or equivalent, to include Maths and English, or progression from a suitable Level 1 or 2 course. If you are over 19, relevant practical experience will be taken into consideration.
You need to have a positive attitude towards supporting children in a school setting. There is a compulsory school practice component to the programme, so you will need to show you can work as part of a school team. You will need a clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check completed before the course starts.
After completing, students are able to take up paid employment within the sector or progress on to our Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning course.
Theory sessions take place in a variety of classrooms, most of which are equipped with the latest white board technology. Practical sessions will be out in placement, where learners will work within the job role of a Teaching Assistant, supervised by other Teaching Assistants and staff within the school setting.
On your first day at college, you'll need to bring your GCSE certificates and your original DBS check.

Q: How long will I be in college each week?
A: You will be expected to attend college for one full day per week (however, if you require GCSE English and Maths, this will be delivered on an additional day), and will be in placement for 12 hours each week in addition.
Q: What will I be qualified to do once I have completed the course?
A: You will be qualified to work as a Teaching Assistant once you have completed the Level 2 and have your Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy qualifications.
Q: I have some literacy and numeracy issues. Can I still do the course?
A: This is dependent on your own abilities and support requirements. Every potential learner is entitled to an assessment of support needs, which will help identify areas for development and ways we can help. You will need to talk these needs through with the Programme Manager and the Learning Needs Coordinator to establish whether this is the right course for you.
