Certificate in Vehicle Accident Repair - Level 1 - Full-time (North Devon)
North Devon Campus
With some 30 million cars on UK roads and the number growing each year, demand for skilled vehicle body repairers can only rise. This one-year study programme is a useful combination of theory and practical skill-building in our modern, well-equipped workshop.
You will study a combination of theory and practical skill-building in our well-equipped workshops.
The qualification is designed to cover the fundamentals of vehicle body repair and refinishing. Skills you will develop include panel repair, applying fillers, primers and finishing coats.
This programme is a sound preparation for further vocational training. You can progress as an apprentice, depending on your work placement, or progress to a Level 2 full-time study programme. We will also encourage you to find work placements, because they will help you develop your skills faster and help you understand how the accident repair business really works.
Course units of study may include:
- Health and safety in the workplace
- Locating, interpreting and using technical information
- Applying engineering techniques in an automotive environment
- Knowledge relating to corrosion protection
- Introduction to low carbon technologies
- Accident repair core knowledge and skills
- Remove and replace interior and exterior trim
- Vehicle paint preparation
- Spray guns and their components
- Introduction to MAG welding
The course is assessed by both written and practical means. Students will be required to complete knowledge assessments via an electronic portfolio for each unit of study. Practical assessments will be carried out in the workshop, and also recorded by the student in the ePortfolio.
The assessments in the workshop will be graded as "competent" or "not competent". Additionally, candidates are required to successfully pass an online exam.
Students who do not pass first time will be given the opportunity to retake the assessment after guidance and further training.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 2 or equivalent or above, preferably including Maths and English.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 3 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 1 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.
You will need to show that you have a real desire to work in the vehicle accident repair industry, ideally planning to progress to an apprenticeship.
This programme is a sound preparation for more vocational training. You could continue to related qualifications or apprenticeships within accident repair, or alternative areas such as vehicle maintenance and repair or vehicle parts operations.
This course is delivered at the North Devon Campus, which incorporates a fantastic vehicle body repair environment that replicates a modern vehicle repair centre.
Equipment includes personal protective equipment (PPE boots/overalls/respirator) and stationary. Details are forwarded to all candidates prior to the start of the course.
Learners can expect to pay an additional £20 to cover materials and a body panel (students are able to take the revitalised body panel home at the end of the year).
For hygiene reasons we suggest you invest in a personal set of appropriate coveralls and steel-toe capped safety boots. Additional personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided by Petroc.
