Diploma in Engineering - Level 2 - Full-time (North Devon)

Level 2
Course Code:
North Devon Campus
One year

Engineering offers a wide variety of exciting career possibilities, and the better your qualifications, the more likely you are to progress into the engineering and manufacturing sectors. This is essentially a practical study programme, but also importantly covers knowledge and understanding in the area of engineering.

This course offers an excellent grounding in engineering.

During the course you will study engineering technology; this will include the health and safety aspects of working in an engineering environment, how to read drawings and the science behind materials and mathematic principles needed within the industry.

Within the practical elements of the course, you will be machining using a vertical mill to produce a small slide block which has a close fitting tolerance slot and machining using a lathe to turn a die arbour. The other practical skill you will develop is bench fitting, which will teach you to use your hands to produce a close tolerance part. This will be supported by the development of Level 2/GCSE Maths and English. You will also develop the skills needed in technical writing and routine computer skills.

Altogether, this is an excellent grounding in exploring the field of engineering and a foundation for further study.
This qualification is assessed by short-answer tests and practical-based assignments. A range of assessment methods are used throughout the course including online tests, assignments, practical tasks and observations.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths and English at grade 3 or above.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 2 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.
Success on this course can lead you towards a Level 3 Diploma in Engineering, an engineering apprenticeship or employment.
The Engineering Centre of Excellence is a specialist training and assessment facility for engineering and manufacturing students. The building includes high-tech CAD facilities, 3D printing, electronics design and assembly, a fabrication and welding workshop, CNC and manual machining and a bench fitting workshop.
You will be required to bring personal safety equipment; this will be discussed at interview.
We recommend you buy a scientific calculator, memory stick (USB), an A4 folder, dividers and general stationery.
Due to the working environment and for hygiene reasons, you will need to purchase a pair of safety shoes (approx. £20-£30) and a pair of overalls (£25) which will be colour coded to year groups and personalised with your name.
There will be a separate supplementary fee of ?£50 to contribute towards the costs of consumables used on the course.

Additional personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided by Petroc*.

* The equipment requirements will be discussed in more detail at interview.
