Making furniture by hand is a real craft skill combining traditional and modern techniques. This course will teach you everything you need to know to become a professional and set you on the right path to a career in furniture making.

You will participate in projects making furniture using traditional and modern techniques.

The course breaks down into two basic categories. You'll study the theory of furniture making in the classroom, what you learn will support the skills you gain in practical sessions. You will also study health and safety, timber technology, tool sharpening and maintenance, drawing, timber jointing, carcase construction, power tools, and carcase installation.

The practical parts of the course will put into practice what you have learned in class as you progress through a series of prepared projects. Starting simply and getting gradually more challenging, these projects are designed to teach you new woodworking skills and stretch your techniques, including how to design and produce workshop equipment, furniture products and how to use power tools.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths and English at grade 3 or above.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 2 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.

Successful completion of a Level 1 construction related course.
On completion of this diploma, you may progress to employment, an apprenticeship or another course within the architecture and construction field, in order to specialise further.
- Safety clothing including boots and overalls need to be purchased by the student.
- Students are required to provide their own stationery and textbooks, a full equipment list will be provided at interview.
- Students are asked to pay a contribution towards materials and learning resources used in workshops and classrooms.
- There may also be trips throughout the year which may incur a cost.
