If so, this Level 3 programme can give you a really valuable qualification that opens doors to university or employment.

You will have the unique opportunity to be a part of our Health and Care Academy which provides the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a variety of departments within Tiverton & District Hospital.


This OCR Cambridge Technical Foundation/Extended Diploma course allows you to link the theoretical study of health and social care with professional practice. The qualification will equip you with professional skills and depth of knowledge to pursue a career in this field. Our students really enjoy the practical experience on this programme and are able to use it to embed theory in practice.

Core Modules include:

- Building Positive Relationships. In this module you will explore the impact of communication on developing positive relationships within the health and social care sector to promote a positive experience for service users.

- Anatomy and Physiology. In this module you will learn about the how the human body works and some of the common conditions that individuals may suffer from, along with the treatment and care for these conditions.

- Infection Control. You will learn about how and why infections happen and the actions that health and social care workers can take to prevent and control them spreading.

- Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. This module explores how service providers ensure that the diverse needs of individuals are considered and service users have equality of access to services.
This programme is assessed both by assignment and external examination. Good time management and being organised is key to achieving higher grades.

Units are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. To progress on to Higher Education you will need to be achieving overall merits and distinctions in most of the units.
Five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above

Students with a full Level 2 vocational qualification at Merit or above will also be considered.
You will need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before you start.
This programme can open up all kinds of higher education options for you, including: nursing, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and social work. Alternatively you could progress to a Foundation Degree at Petroc in topics such as Health and Social Care or Early Childhood Studies.

This programme would also allow you to develop the skills needed to work in the heath or social care sector in a range of roles such as Support Workers and Care Assistants.
There is a bespoke Fitness Suite and Studio within the campus grounds which is available to all students and staff.
There is a well-stocked Learning Resource Centre which provides access to computers, textbooks and journals.
One of the advantages of the Mid-Devon Campus being smaller than other campuses is that it facilitates a more individual learning experience.
We have excellent student support facilities.
On your first day at college you'll need to bring your original DBS check, if already completed, or the evidence needed for this check.

Q: How do I apply for the Health & Care academy?
A: On course induction, you will be provided with the application form for Health and Care Academy. Subject to successful interview, you will be offered a place on the Health and Care Academy programme.

Q: Do I require a uniform for Health and Care Academy?
A: A uniform will be required for Health and Care Academy, and will be supplied to you upon a successful interview.

Q: Will I have to complete work experience as part of this course?
A: All our learners complete work experience in a range of different settings, including care homes, day centres, and early years settings.

Q: Do I have to arrange my own work experience?
A: The course lecturers organise your work experience for you and do discuss, with you, any preferences you many have.
