This study programme is designed to further increase your knowledge, and therefore your opportunities for employment as a vehicle technician.

Petroc is an IMI accredited centre. IMI (Institute for the Motor Industry) set the highest standard in qualifications, accreditation and memberships for the Motor industry. This qualification can lead you directly into the motor industry and is a requirement to be able to apply to become an MOT Tester.

Much of the programme is focused on vehicle electrical/electronic systems such as engine management, electronic chassis systems, transmission systems and auxiliary circuits.

This qualification is:
- Designed to equip you with the high-level specialist technical knowledge and skills to be able to work on modern light vehicles.
- Assessed using a range of methods appropriate for this level of technical qualification. This will include online testing, written assignments and practical tasks where you'll diagnose complex system faults and make recommendations for repair.
The assessment of this VRQ is made up of three components: practical tasks, online testing and written assignments.
Each unit will have assignments covering the content of the syllabus. Students will have to complete diagnostic practical tasks, analyse their results and suggest recommendations.
To be accepted onto a two-year Level 3 programme, all entrants must hold at least a grade 4 in GCSE Maths and a grade 4 in GCSE English, as well as at least three other GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above. Certain subjects require a minimum of GCSE grade 6.

You will need to have successfully completed a Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Diploma as well as Maths and English at Grade C and above or equivalent.
This qualification can lead you directly into the motor industry. It forms the knowledge component of the apprenticeship framework. Once you are employed, you will be encouraged to complete further qualifications.

This qualification also provides a high level of underpinning knowledge and skills which may allow progression on to some Higher Education qualifications in automotive and engineering related subjects.
This course is run at the Mid Devon Campus, which incorporates an advanced vehicle workshop environment that replicates a modern vehicle repair centre.
You will be required to bring personal protective equipment (PPE boots and overalls), stationery and Level 3 technical workbook ISBN 978-1-4080-7754-2. Details are forwarded to all candidates prior to the start of the course.
For hygiene reasons we suggest you invest in a personal set of appropriate coveralls and steel-toe capped safety boots. Additional personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided by Petroc.

There may also be the opportunity to participate in a number of trips during the year that may incur an additional cost.

Q: Is Personal Protective Equipment needed?
A. Yes for health and safety reasons, appropriate coveralls and steel-toe capped safety boots are necessary.

Q: Are there any external trips on this course?
A: There may be the opportunity to participate in a number of trips Throughout the year to the NEC Birmingham, or the Haynes museum in Yeovil that will incur an additional cost. Students have also attended an ERASMUS PLUS ten day work experience residential trip to Barcelona Spain. (This subject to placements and valid passport criteria)
