Support for Teaching & Learning in Schools (TA)
This qualification will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school and college environments. It covers all aspects of specialist support, including planning; delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher, bilingual support, special educational needs support, with personal development and reflective practice.
This engaging and varied study programme has been developed to give you the opportunity to participate in learning that is relevant to you. You will develop a range of skills and techniques, as well as personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in an educational environment. Studying this programme can lead to classroom roles that directly support teaching and learning, such as teaching assistant and learning support assistant.
The study programme is made up of units combining both knowledge and competency and relates directly to the National Occupational Standards (NOS) in supporting teaching and learning in schools.
Units covered will include:
– Understanding child and young person development
– Understanding how to safeguard the wellbeing of children and young people
– Schools as organisations, including roles and responsibilities
– Supporting English and Maths skills
– Promoting children and young people’s positive behaviour
– Developing professional relationships with children, young people and adults
– Supporting assessment for learning
– Engaging in personal development in children’s and young people’s settings
– Supporting children and young people’s health
– Supporting children and young people during learning activities
– Supporting children and young people during transitions
– Understanding how to support the learning of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities
– Supporting children and young people’s speech, language and communication.
As part of the course, it is a requirement that you attend a minimum of two days per week of work experience for under 19’s and a minimum of one day per week of work experience for over 19 learners, although more is encouraged. Placements are organised to be flexible with your commitments and the college timetable.

Assessments
A Petroc assessor will visit intermittently in order to plan, observe and assess progress in placement, and to check competence within the practice-based units. The course tutor will assess assignment work within the knowledge elements of the programme.
Entry Requirements
To be accepted onto this Level 3 programme, you must hold at least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including GCSE Maths and English Language.
You need to be at least 17 years of age to join this programme.
You need to have a positive attitude towards supporting children in a school setting. There is a compulsory school practice component to the programme, so you will need to show you can work as part of a school team.
You will need a clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check completed before the programme starts.
Progression
Upon successful completion of this course, you could become a practitioner in schools and colleges, undertake a foundation degree in Teaching and Learning or a specialist role within the workforce.

Q: Do I need to be employed as a teaching assistant to study this qualification?
A: No, however, you will need a placement for the competency assessed units on this course. We have a placement coordinator who will help to find a placement.
Q: What will I be qualified to do once I have completed the course?
A: You will be qualified to work as a Teaching Assistant / Learning Support Assistant.
Q: Can I be employed in a school and undertake the course?
A: Yes you can. You can count your employed/paid hours as part of your placement but you will need to be available to come into college on your taught day.

– Personal Development Awards – developing six key areas of personal and employability behaviours to prepare you for the working world.
As this course requires you to undertake work placements with children and/or vulnerable adults, a DBS check is required.
