As an Engineering Technician Apprentice working in Technical Support, you’ll experience working as part of a team, to provide technical support and expertise for all areas of engineering and manufacturing. You’ll be working with existing technicians as they provide technical support in areas as diverse as product development and innovation, technical sales and marketing, and production scheduling; and carry out business-critical activities such as providing performance solutions, offline programming, engineering, and process control.

As well as preparing you for a rewarding and successful career in the engineering sector, you’ll also gain a valuable, nationally-recognised, qualification. And, on top of all that, you’ll even be paid while you train.

Years One and Two:
You’ll spend three days a week developing your knowledge and practical skills in areas such as milling, turning, bench fitting, business improvement, maths and science, working in an engineering environment, and undertaking engineering techniques.
- Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
- Level 2 Award for Foundation Phase Gateway Assessment

Years Three and Four:
- Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) - Technical Support
- Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - (Development Knowledge)

You’ll also study a number of topics that are essential to providing technical support in the engineering sector. These could include:
- Communications software
- Analysis tools
- Measurement
- Offline programming
- Process control
- Performance and continuous improvement solutions
- Capacity planning
- Production scheduling and planning
- Product technical applications and capability
- Technical sales and marketing support

- Engineering drawing

By enrolling on this course, you will become part of SWIoT ?" the South West Institute of Technology. SWIoT is a unique collaboration between Petroc and a number of prestigious higher and further education partners; designed to provide innovative technical education and deliver a skilled local workforce, economic growth, and prosperity to the South West.
You’ll be assessed via a combination of practical assignments, written exams and assessments, and computer-based tests.

For your Level 2 Milling, Turning and Bench Fitting practical assessments, you’ll be required to correctly read a technical drawing, and make the product to the given specifications. There will also be a number of written assessments for each discipline.

Business Improvement will be taught and implemented at Level 2, and assessed via a written exam.

Maths, Science, and Working in an Engineering Environment is taught extensively in the first year, and will be assessed via an external computer-based test.

Engineering Techniques will be assessed via a written exam.
Five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above

Upon successful completion of this course, you can advance to a Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship or progress to Higher Education, and enrol on a related HNC or FdSc programme.
This programme will be taught at the Engineering Centre of Excellence, which is a specialist training and assessment facility for engineering and manufacturing students. The centre contains high-tech CAD facilities, 3D printing, electronics design and assembly, a fabrication and welding workshop, CNC and manual machining, and a bench fitting workshop.

The students on this programme will have access to specialist workshops, laboratories, and high-quality CAD applications installed on industry-standard computer systems.

The Mechanical work is supported by a number of professional resources, including a machine shop, welding and sheet metal workshops, and a well-equipped science laboratory with a range of industrial testing equipment.

The Electrical, Electronic, and Digital Technology studies are supported by computer-assisted learning and virtual instrumentation in two classrooms, and a practical workshop where soldering of surface mount devices (SMD), through hole plated (THP) technologies, assembly, and circuit testing can take place.
