FAQs

The modules you will study will include practical and theoretical work, embracing individual and group activities.

You will undertake various forms of research which will develop into experimentation - from which finished outcomes will emerge. This process is supported with critical-thinking essays, reflective documentation and evaluations.

You will explore 20th and 21st century Fine Art and Design practice, starting with traditional modes of expression like painting, drawing and print, where you will study formal elements such as colour tone and composition.

You will incorporate these methodologies through a variety of practical techniques that show keys processes in sculpture, studio ceramics, and commercial product design.

You will also learn how to make paint from scratch, as well as work with wood, stone and metal.

The breadth and depth of knowledge learned will ultimately be applied into specialist briefs, which are devised by students and incorporate professional and entrepreneurial guidelines designed to help you function as an artist in the wider world - including working in the public domain.
Assessments for practical projects take place at the end of each module. Students present their work to two staff and a student 'buddy' who records the session. Feedback is given by staff and marks are awarded and explained. The assessed student and buddy can then discuss the feedback and summarise the positive key elements. It is a transparent and positive process.
Candidates should have 32 UCAS points, preferably in an art related subject.
Applications are welcomed from students with non-traditional or non-academic backgrounds, however you may be asked to submit further evidence to support your application. The most important requirement is a portfolio of work which you will present at interview. This could be wide ranging in content and should demonstrate your potential as an illustration student.
Upon completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to specialise as a Fine Artist or as a Commercial Designer.
Alternatively, you can move on to study the Creative Industries programme at Petroc, or another art-related course at university.
