Interested in furniture making or fine woodworking? This enjoyable and very successful course has a strong emphasis on the practical woodworking skills. The course will prepare you with the essential skills you need for employment in the furniture or fine woodworking industry, this may eventually lead onto you setting up your own woodworking business.

These projects are designed to teach you new woodworking skills and stretch your techniques. Design and Produce Workshop Equipment, Hand Tools (such as a mallet), Make Furniture Products, Small Projects and Tables.


This course will cover all of the basics of furniture making, including health and safety, timber technology, tool sharpening and maintenance, drawing, timber jointing, carcase construction, power tools, and, carcase installation.

As part of this study programme, you will undertake Maths & English (if you have not achieved a GCSE at grade 5/4 or above in these subjects), work experience, enrichment and tutorial.
Assessments will be carried out both by observations and online tests.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 2 or equivalent or above, preferably including Maths and English.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 3 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 1 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.
Progression to Level 2 Furniture Making which can be studied full time or as an apprenticeship.
You will study in both classrooms and specialist carpentry workshops, you will also use our machine shop.
Students are required to purchase their own safety boots; access to workshops is not permitted without them.
Students are required to provide their own stationery and textbooks.
Equipment can be discussed fully at interview and a kit list will be sent out prior to the start of the course.
Students are asked to pay a contribution towards educational visits.
If you are 19+ there will also be course fees, unless you are eligible for financial support, details of which are available from the Guidance Centre team.
