If you're interested in a rewarding and responsible career caring for children then this is the ideal choice. On this course, you will begin to learn all about children, and about what caring for them means. Having the right qualifications is vital, and this Level 1 programme is the perfect introduction.
This course is the perfect introduction to a career in childcare.
On this Caring for Children Diploma (Cache) study programme, you'll acquire basic knowledge on how children grow and develop. You'll also learn how to prepare a safe environment suitable for children to play in, how to set up and deliver activities that children will enjoy and benefit from, and how to safeguard children from harm. You will also have the chance, if you need it, to continue working towards your Maths and English qualifications. You will need these if you want to progress onto Level 2 in preparation for employment in the childcare sector.
There will be a variety of different assessment methods during this course but the majority of it is coursework, with English and Maths exams if required. There will be some written elements but also posters, leaflets, practical demonstrations, role plays, verbals and group discussions.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 2 or equivalent or above, preferably including Maths and English.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 3 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 1 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.
A genuine interest in working with children under 8 Years old
We have two progression routes in the childcare department. The Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Children's Play, Learning & Development is a one-year course and has work placement attached to it, this leads you towards work as an early years practitioner with children aged 0-8 years in nurseries, pre-schools and primary. You can also choose the Level 2 Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools course which will allow you to work as a teaching assistant with children aged 4-16. Progression onto other routes outside the department is also possible.
We have a baby training room with facilities to support baby changing, bathing, and setting up of activities to support different ages of babies and children.
We work with over 90 different childcare settings in and around North Devon who support us with work experience placements.
We have a specialist team of lecturers and assessors with a wide variety of knowledge and skills that help prepare our students for employment or further education.
On your first day at college, you'll need to bring your GCSE certificates, money for food and drink, a pen and a note book.
You will have the opportunity to participate in educational trips and visits. These are optional. You will need to provide your own stationary and print off your work for assignments.
