Every year one in ten hospital patients develop a healthcare associated infection during their stay in a UK hospital. Approximately 5000 patients die as a direct result of one of these infections. In most cases, these infections are difficult to treat and can complicate any other current or previous illnesses that a patient has, as well as causing distress for the individual and their family.

In most cases, these infections are difficult to treat and can complicate any other current or previous illnesses that a patient has, as well as causing distress for the individual and their family. Undertaking this course can help tackle the outbreak of infection in hospitals and health care settings by helping you understand the causes and spread of infection and how you can help to control it.

Unit 1 - Principles of the causes and spread of infection in health care settings
In this unit you will gain an understanding of the chain of infection and look at how infection is caused and how it can spread.

Unit 2 - Principles of the importance of personal hygiene and health in the prevention and control of infection in health care settings
This unit explores the importance of personal hygiene and effective hand washing and the principles of using personal protective equipment.

Unit 3 - Principles of decontamination, cleaning and waste management in health care settings
In this unit you will gain an understanding of how important cleaning, decontamination, sterilisation and waste management is within the healthcare setting.

Unit 4 - Principles of infection prevention and control in a health care setting
This unit will explain the purpose of infection control and look in detail at the regulations, policies, procedures, risk assessments and roles and responsibilities in relation to infection control.
Each unit is assessed though short answer questions. Assessments are completed online via our online assessment platform or you can request paper-based assessments that you will need to post back to us.
There are no specific entry requirements for this course. This is a knowledge based qualification and requires a good level of literacy, reading and writing.

Learners must be over 19 and resident in the UK or EU country for at least 3 years.
You can enrol onto other Level 2 subject specific qualifications within the health and social care sector or progress onto higher level courses.
You will receive a study pack which contains your learning resources, study plan, study guide and how to access the online assessment platform. If you want to complete paper-based assessment you will have the option to request these when you enrol.

This course is also available fully online (learning material and assessments).
This is a distance / home study course, so you can study at your own pace and at a time to suit you. A subject specialist tutor will be allocated to you and you can email them should you have any questions relating to your course.

It is important that you can work independently and be dedicated to set time aside each week for your studies, we recommend that you allow a minimum of 4 to 6 hours a week. Remember that your study time counts towards your CPD - Continuing Professional Development.

There is no cost for this qualification. However, if you do not complete your course inside the agreed timescale without a valid reason there will be a charge of £100.
