There are an estimated 1.5 million people living with a learning disability in the UK. The effects on individuals can vary widely and affect people of every age and background. Each individual with a learning disability is entitled to receive personalised and lifelong support provided by health and social care organisations and a network of carers.

This qualification will provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of issues surrounding different types of learning disabilities and how these affect individuals in their daily lives, including safeguarding, positive risk taking and an awareness of the autistic spectrum.

Unit 1: Understand the context of supporting individuals with learning disabilities
You will contextualise the support provided to individuals with learning disabilities, including gaining an understanding of inclusion, advocacy and empowerment. You will also consider the causes, nature and characteristics of learning disability.

Unit 2: Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care
This unit will help you recognise signs of abuse and understand how to respond to a situation of alleged or suspected abuse. You will also look into ways to reduce the likelihood of abuse and how to report unsafe practices.

Unit 3: Introduction to personalisation in social care
You will consider the importance of adopting a personalised approach to care when supporting individuals with learning disabilities, as well as looking at the systems currently in place which encourage personalisation.

Unit 4: Principles of positive risk taking for individuals with disabilities
In this unit, you will gain an understanding of the importance of using positive person-centred risk assessment to support individuals with decisions about risk taking. This unit also explores the ways in which support can be given to manage identified risks.

Unit 5: Introductory awareness of autistic spectrum conditions
This unit will focus on autistic spectrum condition (ASCs) and the different experiences of individuals living with an ASC. You will consider person-centred ways of supporting individuals who have an ASC, including the different systems which can be used to enable communication.

Unit 6: Principles of supporting individuals with a learning disability to access healthcare
You will gain a comprehensive understanding of the roles of different professionals working with individuals with learning disabilities in healthcare services. The unit also covers how healthcare plans and health checks underpin long-term health and well-being, and explores issues that individuals may face when accessing healthcare services.
Each unit is assessed though short answer questions. Assessments are completed online via our online assessment platform or you can request paper-based assessments that you will need to post back to us.
There are no specific entry requirements for this course. This is a knowledge based qualification and requires a good level of literacy, reading and writing.

Learners must be over 19 and resident in the UK or EU country for at least 3 years.
You can enrol onto other Level 2 subject specific qualifications within the health and social care sector or progress onto higher level courses.
You will receive a study pack which contains your learning resources, study plan, study guide and how to access the online assessment platform. If you want to complete paper-based assessment you will have the option to request these when you enrol.
This is a distance / home study course, so you can study at your own pace and at a time to suit you. A subject specialist tutor will be allocated to you and you can email them should you have any questions relating to your course.

It is important that you can work independently and be dedicated to set time aside each week for your studies, we recommend that you allow a minimum of 4 to 6 hours a week. Remember that your study time counts towards your CPD - Continuing Professional Development.

There is no cost for this qualification. However, if you do not complete your course inside the agreed timescale without a valid reason there will be a charge of £100.
