Childcare - Level 2

This course covers all aspect of children's care with progression leading to 'assistant practitioner' status.
The course also covers all aspects of child development, preparing and maintaining the environment for childcare, as well as supporting children's play and learning.
This course is delivered over one year with a work placement built in to the main programme.

Integrated in the course is one week of external visits and interactive workshops to explore and develop student¿s knowledge and skills as childcare practitioners.
Learners will study a range of core and optional units including:
- understanding children's development
- keeping children safe
- communication with children and adults
- preparing and maintaining environments for child care
- professional development
- roles and responsibilities in child care
- supporting children's play and learning
The theory will be put into action during your placements.
Assessment is completed through a range of assignment based modules and observations within the work placement.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths and English at grade 3 or above.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 2 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.
You will have to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
Learners who successfully pass all the requirements of the qualification, will gain 'assistant practitioner' status. This allows successful learners to undertake work in a supervised capacity within an early years environment (0-8 years).
Many students choose to progress to a Level 3 Childcare course which enables them to gain Early Years Educator Status.
The course is delivered at our Mid Devon Campus, which works closely with a large range of childcare providers in the local vicinity.

Q: How many days a week am I in college?
A: Equivalent to two full days in college.
Q: Does the course involve compulsory work experience?
A: Yes, you will be supported to secure a relevant work placement. We aim for this to be a minimum of one day a week throughout the year. You will receive regular assessments in your workplace.
