This qualification provides the underpinning knowledge and understanding for those working directly with children or young people in schools. Some of the units you will study include how to support health and safety in learning environments, developing professional relationships, supporting positive behaviour in children and young people and how to support bilingual learners.

You will gain practical experience and expertise in a school or college environment. Many of the units are assessed on both knowledge and skills whilst others are assessed on knowledge only.


This engaging and varied study programme has been developed to give you the opportunity to participate in learning that is relevant to you. You will develop a range of skills and techniques, as well as personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in an educational environment.

Units covered will include:
- Understand child and young person development
- Understand how to safeguard the well-being of children and young people
- Communication and professional relationships with children and young people
- Schools as organisations
- Support learning activities
- Promote children and young people’s positive behaviour
- Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults
- Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
- Support assessment for learning
- Engage in personal development in health, social care or children's and young people’s settings
- Support children and young people’s health

You will spend one day per week in college and work up to three days per week in a placement setting to enhance your practical abilities in the working environment.
A Petroc assessor will visit intermittently in order to plan, observe and assess progress in placement, and to check competence within the practice based units. The course tutor will assess assignment work from the BTEC element of the programme.
To be accepted onto a two-year Level 3 programme, all entrants must hold at least a grade 4 in GCSE Maths and a grade 4 in GCSE English, as well as at least three other GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above. Certain subjects require a minimum of GCSE grade 6.

Learners with a full Level 2 vocational qualification at Merit, or, students aged 19 or over with extensive work experience, may also be considered for this course.

You will need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before you start the course.
Completing this programme will equip you to take up employment at supervisory teaching assistant level. Some students choose to continue their studies at university to study teaching and learning. You could also progress onto Petroc's Foundation Degree in Teaching and Learning.
The team who deliver this qualification all have directly relevant experience as well as academic qualifications.
On your first day at college, you'll need to bring your GCSE certificates and your original DBS check.
There will be the opportunity to take part in a residential trip involving overseas work experience whilst on the course. This has been a valuable experience for several of our learners in recent years.

A: Yes, you must be employed in a school setting be able to complete the assessed units on this course.
