Supporting Teaching & Learning (TA) - Level 2 - Full-time (Mid Devon)
Mid Devon Campus
If you are interested in a career supporting children in a school environment, this Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning offers an engaging programme that puts you on exactly the right track.
The programme has been designed to support your learning and help you discover and evaluate your natural abilities and skills in the classroom.
"Before starting the Level 2 TA course I was full of nerves and self-doubt, but this soon disappeared with the year-long continuous support and encouragement from my tutor. Knowing the course allowed me to be flexible and take my son to school, gave me the confidence to continue with what I love doing. I have decided to apply for the Level 3 TA course." - Jessica Gallway
This qualification includes marked 'knowledge' units as well as 'competency' based units to reflect your role in supporting pupils' learning. Studying this programme can lead to classroom roles that directly support teaching and learning, such as teaching assistant and learning support assistant.
The study programme is made up of ten mandatory units plus one additional optional unit, combining both knowledge and competency. It relates directly to the National Occupational Standards (NOS) in supporting teaching and learning in schools.
As part of the course, it is requirement that you attend 2 day's work experience per week within an educational setting.
A Petroc assessor will visit intermittently in order to plan, observe and assess progress in placement, and to check competence within the practice based units. The course tutor will assess assignment work within the knowledge elements of the programme.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths and English at grade 3 or above.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 2 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.
You must be aged between 17 and 19 at the start of September.
You need to have a positive attitude towards supporting children in a school setting. There is a compulsory school practice component to the programme, so you will need to show you can work as part of a school team.
You will need a clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check completed before the programme starts.
*If you are over 19 please apply through the adult course option.
After completing this qualification, students are able to take up paid employment within the sector or progress on to a Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning course.
There is a bespoke Fitness Centre within the campus grounds which is available to all students and staff. There is a well-stocked Learning Resources Centre which provides access to computers, textbooks and journals. One of the advantages of the Mid-Devon Campus being smaller than other campuses is that it facilitates a more individual learning experience. There is excellent student support.
There will be additional costs for a DBS check.
Please contact the Advice & Guidance Centre on 01884 235245 for more information.
Q: How long will I be in college each week?
A: It is likely that you will be expected to attend college for one full day per week, and will be in placement for 12 hours each week in addition. These hours can be less e.g. half a day if adult.
Q: What will I be qualified to do once I have completed the course?
A: You will be qualified to work as a teaching assistant.
Q: I have some literacy and numeracy issues. Can I still do the course?
A: This is dependent on your own abilities and support requirements. Every potential learner is entitled to an assessment of support needs, which will help identify areas for development and ways we can help. You will need to talk these needs through with the programme manager and the learning needs co-ordinator to establish whether this is the right course for you. We also offer the opportunity to study your GCSE Maths and English alongside your Level 2 course.
