Information Technology BTEC Foundation Diploma-Extended Diploma
Level 3 Vocational
North Devon Campus
Do you love all things IT? This course gives you the chance to gain a valuable IT qualification that will prepare you well for both further study or the world of work.
Among the exciting possibilities is the chance to study games hardware and design.
The qualification covers a wide range of IT-related subjects from how a computer works to creating content managed websites. You will study the following core topics in the first year of the programme:
- Communications & Employability Skills - you will learn how to convey both technical and non technical information in a consumable format appropriate for the audience;
- Computer Systems - this module will cover the four-stage model and will also give an introduction to the hardware components found inside a computer system;
- Procedural Programming - learners will be introduced to essential programming skills, this is a pre-requisite to further programming study;
- Web Server Scripting - at the end of this unit learners will produce an industry-standard content managed website using PHP; and,
- Game Design - learners have the opportunity to explore the creative processes required in developing a game idea.
The second year of the programme builds on the knowledge base you build in the first year, among the exciting possibilities is the chance to study Games Hardware and Design.
The programme employs a variety of assessment techniques. These can range from word processed reports to role play, work experience placement, discussions, interviews, presentations and external assessments. Recording equipment is also provided as a means of generating assessment evidence.
BTEC have introduced one written exam and a timed assignment to the Foundation (First) Year.
All learners are given the opportunity to raise their aspirations and improve their grade profiles by revisiting assignment tasks during the integrated upgrade weeks.
To be accepted onto a two-year Level 3 programme, all entrants must hold at least a grade 4 in GCSE Maths and a grade 4 in GCSE English, as well as at least three other GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above. Certain subjects require a minimum of GCSE grade 6.
A Merit in the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in IT or equivalent will also be considered. Just as important as your formal qualifications is your enthusiasm for IT. You must be willing to develop a good all-round knowledge of IT and be able to prepare accurate reports on your research and work.
Many students decide to progress to a Foundation Degree in Computing at Petroc or progress onto degree courses at many of the country's leading universities.
We have a number of IT ‘super rooms’, housing new i7 computers equipped with High Resolution Displays for computing/design work. These rooms have Creative Cloud and computer applications.
You will be taught mostly in computing rooms, equipped with modern networked PCs. Each student will have the use of their own PC. For the theory parts of the course, you may occasionally be taught in a standard classroom.

Q: Do I need any other equipment?
A: A memory stick would be useful to enable you to transport your work electronically to and from home.
