This course is a stepping stone to progression on to Level 2 programmes in Fitness, Sport and Public Services.

This course enables you to explore the different vocational paths that sport, fitness and public services can offer. By widening your knowledge, you will be in a strong position to make a smart, informed career choice.

You will be working to achieve a Level 1 BTEC Introductory Certificate in Sport. The study programme covers units in:

- Playing Sports
- Training for Fitness
- Running a Sports Event.

You will also study the core units of Being Organised and Develop a Personal Progression plan to help be ready to progress on to Level 2.

There will be a number of trips and practical activities throughout the year to support your studies such as visits to professional sports clubs and private gym facilities, outdoor activities such as surfing, wakeboarding and climbing as well as team building activities with the British Army and Royal Marines.

You will be be studying to improve your English and maths from a GCSE grade 2 or 3 or study Functional Skills qualifications. You may also take part in our work experience and enrichment programmes, supporting your studies and gaining you real career experience.

This course forms part of a study programme which includes Maths, English, Tutorials and a range of other activities to make your time at college as successful as possible. Maths and English will be studied at a level to allow you to build upon the skills you have at the start of the course.
You must pass all the units to gain this certificate. To pass each unit, you will produce a portfolio of evidence including a range of written assignment work, presentations, project work, group work and practical-based assessments. The assessment are graded on a Pass, Merit, Distinction system.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 2 or equivalent or above, preferably including Maths and English.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 3 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 1 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.

This course is for people with a real commitment to pursue a career in sport, fitness, pubic services or outdoor education and gain further qualifications or employment.
You can progress to the BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Sport, the Level 2 Diploma in Public Services, the CYQ Level 2 Diploma in Fitness, Exercise and Health, or, go on to do other further education courses at Petroc.
Practical sessions will take place in the college gym, sports hall and fitness studio, alternatively off site venues may be used. Classrooms will be at the main North Devon campus.
Please bring a sports kit and a refillable water bottle.
There is an initial course fee of £150 to cover the costs of off-site trips, visits and activities. This can be paid £50 per term.

Q: Do I have to be good at sport to do the course?
A: No, you do not need to be good at any sport; however, you will have to participate in a range of different sports and activities for some of the practical assessments.

Q: Do I Still have to do Maths and English?
A: You will need to study Maths and English as part of your programme until you achieve a GCSE grade 4 or equivalent.

Q: Are there any exams?
A: The BTEC Certificate is all coursework assessed, however, you will have exams for the English and Maths aspects of your study programme.
