Performing Arts (Dance) BTEC Certificate-Subsidiary Diploma - Level 3 - Full-time (North Devon)

A-level equivalent
Course Code:
North Devon Campus
Two years

If you have the passion for dance, we have a superb purpose-built dance studio at our Brannams Campus where you can develop your technical, performance and creative skills through dance classes and performance. Complementing your A-level studies, this challenging course is designed to let you explore your full potential while giving you a real insight into dance as a subject for study.

You'll study a range of dance styles, focusing on technical training and performance skills.

In your first year, you will study for the Certificate which is equivalent to one AS Level. The Extended Certificate course is equivalent to one A Level and is completed in the second year of study. You will study this course alongside three other A-level subjects, or BTEC equivalent.
The course develops practical skills through technical development and rehearsal for performance. Contextual studies are developed through research and analysis.

The course consists of four units taught across two years.

In the first year you will study two units:
- Unit 1 Investigating Practitioners’ Work
You will investigate the work of performing arts practitioners and develop critical analysis skills and contextual understanding of how practitioners communicate themes in their work.
- Unit 2 Developing Skills and Techniques for Live Performance
You will explore technical performance skills with a focus on developing and demonstrating skills and techniques in at least two dance styles .

In year two you will study two further units:
- Unit 3 Group Performance Workshop
You explore and integrate creative, physical and performance skills and techniques, working collaboratively to create a performance in response to a given stimulus.
- Unit 4 Contemporary Dance Technique
You will develop the skills needed to be a contemporary dancer by participating in technique classes, rehearsals and performance. You will gain an understanding of this dance style and the key influences on its development through research and practical application. Throughout your learning and development you will be taught how to reflect on your progress and practice,
which will support your development as a dancer.
You will study four units each of which will be graded Pass, Merit, or Distinction (the A-level equivalents are E for Pass, C for Merit, and A for Distinction). These are then condensed down to the grade you will receive at the end of the course. The grade is equivalent to an A-level and accepted as such by universities and the industry.
The course is mainly assessed through coursework: rehearsal, performances, research, portfolio, presentation discussion and evaluation.
Practical work is assessed in public and studio performances. All assessed work is scheduled to strict deadlines over the course of the programme. Failure to submit work on time can affect the overall grade awarded. All assessments are marked by two lecturers and a sample is verified by an Edexcel examiner. This ensures that all marking is fair and matches Edexcel national standards. There are two externally assessed units - one of which consists of a timed written exam.
To be accepted onto a two-year Level 3 programme, all entrants must hold at least a grade 4 in GCSE Maths and a grade 4 in GCSE English, as well as at least three other GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above. Certain subjects require a minimum of GCSE grade 6.

A minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language, Maths and Dance and/or evidence of previous dance training or performance experience.
All students who have studied dance at Petroc and applied for university have achieved places, many at the top universities and dance colleges in the country, such as The Laban Centre, London Contemporary Dance School, Urdang and Bird College.
The college has a theatre, rehearsal rooms and dance studio.
