Interested in the art of Hairdressing? If you feel you have the natural creativity to shine in this area, this study programme provides the ultimate introduction to the industry. The qualification is a great way to experience what a career in the industry could mean for you, allowing you to gain valuable experience and meet lots of people as you work towards a nationally recognised qualification.
This course is completed within our range of modern salons at the Mid Devon Campus, where you will use industry-recognised products whilst gaining a firm understanding of the versatility of their uses.
The programme is divided into modules of study that cover all aspects of hairdressing, including:
- Health & Safety
- Client Care and Communication
- Client Consultation
- Shampoo and Conditioning the Hair & Scalp
- Cutting Women's Hair
- Colouring Women's Hair
- Perming Women's Hair
- Styling & Dressing Women's Hair
- Competition Work.
You will study at least ten different units as you work towards your VRQ Diploma. You'll also study basic salon skills so you can make sure the industry is right for you. You'll also work on your Functional Skills like Maths and English to make you as employable as possible. You'll be assessed by your commercially competent practice working on clients, along with online tests and assignments.
Throughout the qualification, a range of theory and practical assessments will support your learning and test your knowledge and skills development. You will be taught by industry professional staff within our new modern commercial salons.
On-going assessment is by multiple choice question tests that you complete online, as well as working on clients to gain competency and confidence within this speciality field. As you progress through the qualification we will also be working on the development of your Employability Skills as well as your Maths and English.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths and English at grade 3 or above.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 2 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade D or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths at grade 3 or above and GCSE English Language at grade 3 or above.
Entrants holding a grade 2 or a 3 in GCSE Maths will study towards GCSE Maths to gain grade 4 or above. Those with a grade 1 or below will study Level 1 Functional Skills Maths and retake GCSE Maths in the following year.
Entrants holding a grade 2 or a 3 in GCSE English Language will study towards GCSE English Language to gain grade 4 or above. Those with a grade 1 or below will study the Level 1 Functional Skills English and retake GCSE in the following year.
At the end of the year all learners are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of their Level 2 Study Programme and achieved a graded improvement in their Maths and English Language studies before being allowed to progress.
Following successful completion of the course you will be invited to continue your studies with us. For a career within the industry you should progress on to Level 2 NVQ in Hairdressing. However, should you wish to take an alternative route, you can study further and specialise in Barbering.
You will work in one of our newly built commercial salons during your practical training and assessment. You will have access to all college facilities including the IT suite and library. Work books and training materials are used to support learners with their study.
