Interested in the art of Hairdressing? If you feel you have the natural creativity to shine in this area, this study programme provides the ultimate introduction to the industry.
This course is completed within our range of modern salons at the Mid Devon Campus, where you will use industry-recognised products whilst gaining a firm understanding of the versatility of their uses. All lecturers have current industrial experience ensuring your knowledge is relevant to the profession.
You will study basic salon skills so you can make sure the industry is right for you whilst having the opportunity to
improve your maths and English skills.
You will study compulsory topics including:
- Principles of practice of hairdressing
- Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
- Style, set and finish hair
- Cut hair using basic techniques
- Plait and twist hair
You will gain practical experience within a commercial salon, working on clients to gain competency and confidence within this speciality field. Practical assessment occurs on one day where a variety of skills will be demonstrated. Theory skills will also be tested.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths and English at grade 3 or above.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 2 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade D or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths at grade 3 or above and GCSE English Language at grade 3 or above.
Entrants holding a grade 2 or a 3 in GCSE Maths will study towards GCSE Maths to gain grade 4 or above. Those with a grade 1 or below will study Level 1 Functional Skills Maths and retake GCSE Maths in the following year.
Entrants holding a grade 2 or a 3 in GCSE English Language will study towards GCSE English Language to gain grade 4 or above. Those with a grade 1 or below will study the Level 1 Functional Skills English and retake GCSE in the following year.
At the end of the year all learners are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of their Level 2 Study Programme and achieved a graded improvement in their Maths and English Language studies before being allowed to progress.
Following successful completion of the course you will be invited to continue your studies with us. For a career within the industry you should progress on to Level 2 Technical in Hair Colouring Skills. However, should you wish to take an alternative route, you can study further and specialise in Barbering.
You will work in one of our newly built commercial salons during your practical training and assessment. You will have access to all college facilities including the IT suite and library. Work books and training materials are used to support learners with their study.

Q: will I be expected to purchase a kit?
A: Yes, you will need a kit (the order form will be provided when you have successfully secured a place on the course) and will include the tools of your trade: combs, brushes, scissors etc.
