Do you love food and have a passion for cookery and customer service? Then this is the study programme for you.
This one-year qualification has a proven track record of providing students with the skills and knowledge to develop highly successful careers in the dynamic and exciting world of hospitality and catering.
You will gain culinary skills and food service techniques to help you succeed as a professional chef either locally, nationally or overseas.
On this practical programme, you will learn subjects such as:
- Pastry and Dough
- Meat, Fish and Vegetable Cookery
- Wine Appreciation
- Table Theatre Techniques.
You will develop your talents through working in our new, state-of-the-art kitchens and contemporary restaurant.
Work experience can form part of the programme and there may even be opportunities to experience food and culture in another European country.
The programme is assessed with a mixture of continuous practical assessments and assessed written assignments.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths and English at grade 3 or above.
Entrants who do not have a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English will continue studying these subjects.
At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 2 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next course.
On successful completion of the Level 2 programme, you can progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Professional Cookery, an advanced apprenticeship or into employment as a professional trainee chef/waiter.
The state-of-the-art Lifestyle and Tourism Centre, is home to Petroc’s public-facing facilities and provides students with opportunities to engage with customers and work in a realistic industry setting.
The Taw Restaurant, with its stunning views across Barnstaple, gives hospitality and catering students the chance to engage with customers and hone their skills in the industry-standard training kitchens.
You will need to purchase kitchen and restaurant uniforms, knives and books. This will be discussed at interview.

Q: Is there evening work as part of the course?
A: Yes. As part of the course and in preparation for industry, students work in our public restaurant for one evening each week.

A: Yes, you will need to purchase a kitchen and restaurant uniform, knives and books.
Q: Is there any financial help available?
A: Yes. Qualifying students can apply for support from the College Learner Support Fund which is means tested.
