Running for its second consecutive year, seven Petroc students have started a 16-week business academy at Applegate with a chance to progress onto a fully funded, five-year degree apprenticeship course, in partnership with Plymouth University.
As members of the Applegate Academy, each student will gain experience in every department in Applegate, from sales and marketing to finance and content administration.
Dan Heard commented: “We are on placement one day per week which gives us an opportunity to learn whilst working within the business environment, providing us with an insight into what business life is like and how it operates.”
Former Petroc students Jo Nancekivell and Jon Loates enrolled on the first academy course in January 2016. They were joined by Claire Knight, another former Petroc student, on the degree apprenticeship pathway where they work four and a half days a week and study for the remaining afternoon during the five-year syllabus that is scheduled to run between 2016 and 2021.
Stuart Brocklehurst, Chief Executive Officer of Applegate Marketplace, commented: “We have been extremely pleased with the contribution made by Jo, Jon and Claire in their first five months with Applegate. I am confident that our new academy members will embrace their time here and gain vital experience for when they enter the workplace.”
Seven degree apprenticeship places are available with Applegate, starting in September 2017, giving students the chance to study for a BSc Honours Degree in Business and Management and gain the professional qualifications of Chartered Manager and Member of the Chartered Institute of Management.
Diane Dimond, Principal of Petroc, added: ‘’The Applegate Academy is a program we have seen develop and grow in partnership with Petroc over the past year. It provides our students with the essential work experience they need to flourish when they leave us and join the workplace.”
Marie Gould, Curriculum Team Leader for Business, Admin and Route to Employment commented:
“Petroc has nearly 200 full-time business diploma students so to get valuable work experience in the local area is a task in itself. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to progress.”
