This Level 1 qualification will introduce you to the role of a bookkeeper and simple bookkeeping techniques, whilst providing an understanding of why it’s important to keep accurate and up-to-date financial information in business. You will learn how to identify a range of bookkeeping transactions including income, expenses, and profit and loss, as well as gain an understanding of the benefits and risks associated with bookkeeping software and the importance of ethical behaviour.

During the course, you will learn the following skills:
– An understanding of the role of the bookkeeper, including the need to produce timely and accurate work and to follow ethical principles.
– Underpinning theory including how to identify assets, liabilities, income, expenses, capital profit or loss, and the differences between trading for cash and trading on credit.
– Processing customer and supplier transactions, entering receipts and payments into the cash book, and checking amounts against the bank statement in preparation for bank reconciliation.
– Introduction to the dual effect of transactions. This is a fundamental underpinning concept for double-entry bookkeeping and will support you if you move on to study bookkeeping at Level 2.
– The role that software can have in bookkeeping and the benefits and risks that different types of software may bring.
– The differences between cloud accounting software and traditional accounting software.
– The importance of software security and the steps that can be taken to keep data secure.

You must successfully achieve one mandatory unit assessment to achieve this qualification. The proportion of this qualification assessed by externally marked assessment is 100%.

The assessment in this qualification:

– is set and marked by AAT

– is computer-based

– is time-limited

– is scheduled by training providers or assessment venues

– takes place at approved training providers and assessment venues under controlled conditions.

This qualification is not graded. To pass the qualification, you must pass one mandatory assessment.

Entry Requirements

There is no need for any prior accounting or bookkeeping knowledge, however, for the best chance of success, we recommend that you begin your studies with a good standard of English and Maths. Accountants work at the very heart of a business and are expected to be able to communicate information clearly and appropriately to a given audience.

This course is available for learners who are aged 19+ on 31 August 2024.


The skills developed by studying this qualification will give you a solid base from which to seek employment with greater confidence or enable you to progress to the next level of learning.

The skills developed in this qualification can lead to employment in junior or supporting administrative roles in companies across a wide range of sectors, for example, as a trainee bookkeeper, accounts administrator, billing/payments administrator/coordinator, accounts junior, accounts receivable/payable assistant, procurement and finance assistant, assistant cashier.

The skills developed in this qualification may also underpin those developed further into a suitable Level 2 AAT qualification.

You will have classroom-based taught sessions and undertake independent research as well as group discussions.

A. The Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping is nationally recognised and certificated through AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians)

A. Many of our courses are free to attend (subject to eligibility). We will carry out a fee assessment when you enrol to establish if you meet this criteria
