There are many factors that can impact on children and young people at different stages of their development. It is important to understand what these factors are, as well as the ways in which children and young people’s development can be enhanced through activity and interaction.
In this course you will explore how children’s development can be influenced by factors such as nutrition, and gain an understanding of the various safeguarding responsibilities of those who care for children and young people. You will also discover the importance of activities, play and interaction, and learn how to contribute positively to the development of children and young people at different stages. The qualification focuses on the age groups 0-6 years.
– Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
In this unit you will learn about legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people (including e-safety). You will also cover what to do when children or young people are injured or ill, including emergency procedures as well as how to respond to evidence or concerns that a child or young person has been abused, harmed or bullied.
– Importance of place for early learning
This unit will give you an understanding of the importance of creativity and imagination for the development of a child as well as the importance of games with rules in the development of a child. It will develop your knowledge in how to organise a cooking activity for children and understand the role of creative activities in enhancing children’s learning and development as well as the importance of books and stories in relation to children’s learning and development. Furthermore, you will learn to understand the importance of talking and listening activities in relation to children’s learning and development.
– Use food and nutrition information to plan a healthy diet
Within this unit you will look at the core knowledge on understanding food labelling and food additives and the ability to apply principles of healthy eating.
– The value of play to young children
This unit will give you an understanding of the value of play to young children’s development as well as different play activities suitable for young children from birth to five years.
– Young children’s development
In this final unit, you will learn about the stages of development of young children from birth to three years as well as how positive environments support the development of young children and how to support young children’s development by providing for their basic needs.
Each unit is assessed through short answer questions of at least one paragraph. Assessments are completed online via our online assessment platform or you can request paper-based assessments that you will need to post back to us.
You must be over 19 and have been resident in the UK for at least three years.
Aged 19 – 23 must hold a full Level 2 qualification.
There are no specific entry requirements for this course. This is a knowledge based qualification and therefore a good level of literacy, reading and writing is essential.
You can enrol onto other Level 2 subject specific qualifications or progress onto higher level courses.

For learners wishing to study fully online, full details on how to access the platform will be emailed after your induction call.
For those requesting workbooks with online assessments, your books will be posted to you after your induction call. Once you have received these you will be emailed full details to access the platform.
If you want to complete the paper-based assessments you will have the option to request these when you enrol.
Q: How long will this course take to complete?
A: This is a distance/home study course, so you can study at your own pace and at a time to suit you within a 16 week period. A subject specialist tutor will be allocated to you and you can email them should you have any questions relating to your course. It is important that you can work independently and be dedicated to set time aside each week for your studies, we recommend that you allow a minimum of 8 to 10 hours a week. Remember that your study time counts towards your CPD – Continuing Professional Development.
Q: How much does this course cost?
A: There is no cost for this qualification. However, if you do not complete your course inside the agreed timescale without a valid reason there will be a charge of £125.
