This industry-recognised Personal Trainer qualification equips you with all the skills and knowledge you need to step up from being a fitness instructor into the world of Personal Training.

The course develops the skills learned and knowledge gained on a Level 2 Fitness qualification. Modules will work on the theory behind training and fitness as well as teaching you how to apply the skills of a Personal trainer in a realistic and modern gym and fitness studio settings. It builds excellence in personal training, focused on providing planned personal exercise programmes on a one-to-one or small group basis.

Assessment methods for this course are varied but involve planning, teaching and evaluating Personal Training sessions, production of a portfolio, practical performance, multiple-choice theory exams, case studies and oral vivas (verbal questioning).

Entry Requirements

You will need to have a Certificate or Diploma in Fitness Instructing before coming onto the Diploma in Personal Training.


Upon successful completion of the course, you will become an industry recognised Personal Trainer.

With this qualification, you can apply for employment as a personal trainer in a leisure centre or health club, or start your own business offering personal training.

Alternatively, you may choose to continue your study at Petroc by doing one of our part-time Sports Massage Therapy or Exercise Referral courses. The qualification does reward UCAS points and you can use these to progress onto our Foundation Degree in Sport (Health, Fitness and Coaching).

Facilities and resources

Petroc has its own ‘Active Inside and Out’ Sports and Fitness centre, with a state-of-the-art Gym and a well equipped Fitness Suite.


Q: Do I have to be fit and young to do this course?

A: No, there are elements of the course that do require a general level of fitness, but age is not seen as a barrier. It will be seen as an advantage at interview if you have experience of participation in exercise and fitness.

Q: It’s been a long time since I’ve been a student, will this count against me at interview?

A: Some of our most successful students are those who have been away from education for a while and are looking to turn their interest in fitness into a career, so no, this will not count against you.

Q: Is funding available?

A: Learners under 24 years of age may be eligible for financial assistance from the Learner Support Fund. Learners over 24 can seek an Advanced Learning Loan. For both of these, please speak to the Advice & Guidance Centre on 01271 852422.
