Diploma in Personal Training and Sports Massage
This study programme comprises two combined qualifications that will give you the opportunity to pursue two related careers in one year of study.
The programme builds excellence in personal training, focused on providing planned personal exercise programmes on a one-to-one or small group basis.
Modules covered in the Personal Trainer Diploma include:
– Anatomy and physiology
– Programming and delivering personal training
– Health and safety
– Sports conditioning
– Business marketing
– Outdoor fitness
The Sports Massage element covers all aspects of practical sports massage including:
– Postural analysis
– Sports massage movements
– Health and safety
– Set-up of treatment area
– Consultation and aftercare advice
There are extra curricular opportunities to travel, attend events, learn from guest speakers and additional value added activities.
A fair amount of the assessed content of both courses requires case studies, so you will need to source willing participants to be part of your course
This course forms part of a study programme which includes Maths, English, Tutorials and a range of other activities to make your time at college as successful as possible. Maths and English will be studied at a level to allow you to build upon the skills you have at the start of the course.
An approved Level 2 gym qualification is a pre-requisite, and many learners study this as their next step following completion of our Level 2 Diploma in Exercise and Fitness Instruction, or Part Time Certificate in Fitness Instructing.
Assessment methods for this course are varied but involve planning, teaching and evaluating fitness sessions, production of a portfolio, practical performance, multiple-choice theory exams, case studies and oral vivas. The Sports Massage involves working with clients, practical massage therapy assessments and keeping a log of massage therapy experience.
To be accepted onto a Level 3 programme, you must hold at least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including GCSE Maths and English language.
You must also hold a Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification.
For adult learners, selection will be by interview where candidates will need to demonstrate their interest in and commitment to fitness, massage and learning.
With this qualification, you can apply for employment as a personal trainer in a leisure centre or health club, or start your own business offering personal training and sports massage.
Further study options include a Level 3 Exercise Referral and Level 4 Massage qualification, linked to a start-up Business course.
Students can progress to our Foundation Degree course in Sport, Coaching, Health and Fitness at Petroc, or move into related employment.
Facilities and resources
The course will be taught in a variety of learning environments, including the fitness studio, our well-equipped gym, specialist massage therapy suite and Spa facilities as well as maximising the use of the outdoor training environment, for example the beach for the Outdoor Exercise module. We will also attend various local sport and physical activity-related events to gain first-hand experience with treating competitors.
Q: Do I have to be fit and young to do this course?
A: No, there are elements of the course that do require a general level of fitness, but age is not seen as a barrier. It will be seen as an advantage at interview if you have experience of participation in exercise and fitness. It is quite a popular choice for Adult learners to study aspects of this programme.
Q: It’s been a long time since I’ve been a student, will this count against me at interview?
A: Some of our most successful students are those who have been away from education for a while and are looking to turn their interest in fitness into a career, so no, this will not count against you.
Q: Is funding available?
A: Learners under 24 may be eligible for financial assistance from the Learner Support Fund. Learners over 24 can seek an Advanced Learning Loan. For both of these, please speak to the Advice & Guidance Centre for more details.
Every full-time student at Petroc will have their own Study Programme which will include:
