First Extended Certificate in Business
The business world offers no end of exciting career opportunities for anyone with the right skills, knowledge and aptitude. This wide-ranging one-year course is an ideal introduction to business, whether you want to embark on a business career or just keep your options open.
This programme will give you the opportunity to develop a broad range of knowledge and skills across the business spectrum including marketing, finance, law, online business, business purposes.

You will be assessed through coursework and two externally-set assessments. This BTEC qualification will encourage you to develop your entrepreneurial know-how by creating a business plan and harnessing the skills which will help you to succeed in future business projects.
All entrants must hold four GCSEs at grade 3 or equivalent (or above), preferably including GCSE Maths and English. If you do not have a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English you will continue studying these subjects alongside your chosen course(s). At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 2 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next level course
Successful learners will have the choice of progressing to the Level 3 Diploma in Business (providing they meet the Maths and English requirements), other vocational routes – including apprenticeships, or employment in areas such as administration, retail, marketing or finance.
Facilities and resources
This business programmes take place in newly refurbished rooms, offering students the opportunity to learn in a vibrant and inviting environment. Students also have access to IT suites and laptops to help them conduct research and complete coursework.
We have a number of IT `super rooms’, housing new i7 computers equipped with High Resolution Displays for computing/design and CAD work. These rooms have Creative Cloud, computer applications and one of our rooms has Autodesk Revit Architectural Design software installed.
Q: Are there any additional costs?
A: There are no specific course costs, though all learners will be expected to purchase the course textbook and revision guides. Any optional trips or activities will incur an additional cost. You will also need funds for printing work.
Every full-time student at Petroc will have their own Study Programme which will include:
– Your academic or vocational qualification.
– Maths and English Language development – if you have not achieved GCSE grade 4 in either of these subjects.
– Work Experience – hours will vary depending on your qualification and course level.
– Tutor Support – to support your personal, academic and professional development.
– Sustainability – helping you to identify how you can improve the sustainability of your future employment sectors.
– Personal Development Awards – developing six key areas of personal and employability behaviours to prepare you for the working world.
