Foundation Degree Electronics and Communications

Our foundation degrees, in partnership with the University of Plymouth, are equivalent to studying the first two years of an honours degree, but unlike traditional degrees there are no formal entry requirements. Created in collaboration with employers, they combine academic study with developing the skills and attributes needed in the workplace. It makes them ideal preparation for a specific profession or industry or for making progress in your existing career. You can always convert to a full honours degree by taking a top-up course on completion.

There can be very little left in life untouched by electronics. Together electronics and communications technologies are transforming the world and our lives in it; they may also hold the key to solving some of our most pressing social and environmental problems.

Designed to meet detailed requirements of the electronics industry, this course explores everything from analytical methods and principles to advanced CAD techniques, and electronic system design.

The course begins by looking at analytical methods, focussing on the mathematical strategies and processes involved in solving a wide range of engineering problems. You will also learn electrical and electronic theory and principles and begin to analyse electronic circuits and devices and investigate their performance.

You will explore 2D and 3D modelling, and use computer simulation in engineering tasks, evaluating wireframe, surface and solid modelling techniques, and their relationship to manufacturing.

As the course progresses, it introduces principles of control systems and electronic systems design, communications engineering, micro-programmable systems and instrumentation and control.

Using the knowledge of all these aspects of electronics and communication, you will complete an engineering project. The project is an individual investigation of a routine problem in any of the engineering disciplines encountered in the programme, demonstrating your understanding of the inter-relationships in a range of engineering disciplines.

Assessments

A mix of assessment methods track your progress throughout this course with assignments, in-course assessments, coursework, project work, and formal examinations at the end of each module.

Entry Requirements

To be accepted onto this Level 3 programme, you must hold at least four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including GCSE Maths and English Language.

You’ll need four GCSEs (or equivalent qualifications) at Grade C/4 or above, including Maths and English at a minimum of Grade C/4.

You’ll also require 48 UCAS points for admission on to this course, this equates to the following:

Merit/Merit at National Diploma level

or

Merit/Merit/Pass at Extended Diploma level

or

A Level equivalents in a related subject


Mature learners will be subject to an interview prior to entry; where any related experience will be taken into consideration.

Progression

Some students take up trainee roles in the electronics and communications industries, but many choose progress to theBSc (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree at the University of Plymouth. By completing the degree top-up, and with the relevant work experience, you could go on to become a Chartered Engineer.

Facilities and resources

You will study in our new South West Institute of Technology building which houses clean room fabrication capabilities, electronics design, manufacture and testing laboratories, additive technologies (3D) and production robotics.
