Foundation Diploma/Extended Diploma in Business
This Foundation Diploma is a standalone one-year programme, and if successful, you can carry forward the units to a second year and complete the Extended Diploma. BTECs embody a fundamentally learner-centred approach to the curriculum.
You will explore businesses and their structure and also look at the decision-making process. Practical elements include work experience and enterprise skills and there will also be an opportunity to pitch new business ideas.
In the first year, this diploma offers an introduction to business-related topics covering the following core areas:
– Exploring Business
– Personal & Business Finance
– Developing a Marketing Campaign
– Managing an Event.
There will also be two relevant optional units.
You will take part in an enterprise challenge and organising an event which is designed to improve your entrepreneurial skills. The qualification includes an exciting work experience placement during your first year. Year one is a standalone qualification equivalent to one and a half A-levels.
If you are successful and decide to (and are approved to) continue for a second year, you will explore more specialist areas such as:
– International Business
– Principles of Management
– Business Decision Making
You will also study four relevant optional units such as Recruitment and Selection and Employment Law.
The programme employs a variety of assessment techniques. These can range from word processed reports to role play, work experience placement, discussions, interviews, presentations and external assessments. Recording equipment is also provided as a means of generating assessment evidence.
To be accepted onto a Level 3 programme, you must hold at least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including GCSE Maths and English language.
A Grade 4 and above in both English and Maths is required. If you have grade 4 in both English and Maths, you will need to have a strong grade profile of 4/5 and above in other GCSE subjects. Your entry qualifications will be discussed at interview and reviewed on your introductory day.
Relevant Level 2 core study programme at Merit (for those with a higher level of academic content).
Employers will find this qualification valuable because the business skills you will gain are relevant both to the public and private sectors.
Upon completion of this course, you could go on to teaching, law, sales, event management, banking, retail management, accountancy, administration and marketing occupations. You can also consider progression onto higher apprenticeships or degrees.
This programme will help support employment with management opportunities.
