GCSE English Language
A GCSE in English can be your key to future success in work and education.
In the first six weeks we will assess your progress. Based on this assessment we will recommend a one or a two-year programme of study.
During the course, you will read and analyse a number of written and spoken, fiction and non-fiction, texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including letters, blogs and articles.
You will develop your skills by writing a variety of texts for different audiences and purposes as well as improving your spelling, punctuation and grammar.
The course is assessed by two final exams in June. In Paper 1, you will analyse a fiction text and do a piece of creative writing. In Paper 2, you will compare non-fiction texts from different centuries and do a piece of writing to express an opinion. There is no coursework, however, there will be regular homework.
There are no entry requirements but if you haven’t studied English for a long term you could join an Improve your English course first and progress to GCSE the following year.
Completion of this course will open up a wide range of further studies or employment opportunities.
Facilities and resources
Learning resources will be supplied. Access to library and other on-line learning aids will be available.
Q: I wasn’t very good at English at school. Is this the right course for me?
A: Many adults find that things they struggled with at school are now surprisingly easy! However, there is a lot to cover in one year and you might find this challenging. This is why we spend the first six weeks assessing your skills and seeing how quickly you make progress. We can then advise you if GCSE is the right course.
Q: What can I do if I don’t feel able to complete the GCSE in one year?
A: We also offer an Improve Your English class, which allows you to take two years to achieve the GCSE. In the first year, you would work towards a Functional Skill at Level 1 and improve your English skills and confidence in preparation for completing GCSE in the following year.
