Painter and Decorator – Apprenticeship (Standard)

Painters and decorators make buildings look their best with a perfect finish. They ned to have a good knowledge of paint coatings and wall coverings and understand and comply with statutory, safety and environmental requirements.

During this apprenticeship, you will be required to learn the following knowledge, skills and behaviours:

KNOWLEDGE:

Work methods
– The purpose of a range of equipment, tools and materials.
– Characteristics of materials and their reaction to atmospheric conditions.
– Safe and efficient methods of use, maintenance, movement, protection and storage of materials and equipment.
– Work hazards and appropriate safety requirements.
– How to work at height.

Identify and respond to customer needs
– The most appropriate products and use of colour in different settings.
– Formal and informal communication.
– Uses of information technology in the workplace.
– Principles of costing, pricing and budgeting.
– Time, scheduling and costs associated with a project.

Construction Industry and Building Methods
– Key factors and systems of working in different sectors.
– Key differences between modern and traditional construction methods.

Product and specification Information
– Differences of each product type.
– Drying, curing and re-coating times.
– The effect of colour in relation to good design.
– The causes of common problems, how these can be prevented and how to correct them.
– Data sheets, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health sheets, method statements and risk assessments.

Preparation and Application and Removal
– Difference in systems for new and pre- decorated surfaces.
– Types of preparation methods.
– Traditional and modern methods of making good surfaces.
– Different systems for metals, wood, plastic and factory finishes.
– Techniques of application.
– Specialist decorative techniques.
– The skills of removal and application of wall coverings.

SKILLS:

Work methods
– Preparing work areas.
– Identifying hazards and risks.
– Selecting and using paint, tools and equipment
– Following work procedures and method statements.
– Reacting and reporting an accident or incident.

Identify and respond to customer needs
– Preparing for meetings and discussions.
– Using appropriate listening, and questioning, techniques.
– Using appropriate terminology when attending meetings.
– Working to allocated times and schedules for the project.

Construction Industry and Building Methods
– Identifying different industry sectors.
– Identifying different building methods which determine the appropriate paint products and specifications.

Product and specification Information
– Interpreting specification documents and ensure correct preparation.
– Referring to manufacturers’ product information and data sheets.
– Advising clients about basic colour choices.
– Recommending appropriate products for differing scenarios and sectors.
– Identifying and rectifying common surface coating and wall covering problems.
– Interpreting and using health and safety documents.

Preparation and Application and Removal
– Identifying substrates, hard wood, soft wood, ferrous and non- ferrous metal, factory finished etc.
– Preparing and stripping surfaces using abrasives, chemical etchants, power sanders, heat and liquid methods.
– Understanding and applying powder, two-pack, surfacers and resin fillers.
– Using different application methods.
– Wallpapering using range of techniques.

Course details

Assessments

You will be required to undertake an end-point assessment, which consists of a knowledge test, skills test and professional discussion.

Entry Requirements

You must be employed with a trade specific employer in order to start this apprenticeship. If you have not yet achieved Level 2 English and maths, you must achieve this prior to taking your end-point assessment.

Progression

Upon completion of this apprenticeship, you could further develop your knowledge through a higher level apprenticeship.

Facilities and resources

As an apprentice, you will have full access to the college facilities.
