The Science T-level is designed to develop the knowledge and behaviours needed for excellent scientific practice as well-developing your practical skills. The expectation is that learners who complete this programme of study will go on to work as either a science technician (for example, food technologist, laboratory technician, metrology technician) or progress onto study at degree level or as a higher apprentice. Your T-level has two main components: the Core (Year One) and the Occupational Specialism (Year Two).
The core component will include specific knowledge in science, across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as an introduction to the skills and behaviours needed to be successful in the Science sector, e.g. health and safety, managing information and data in the sector, and good scientific practice.
Alongside this core content, you will complete a work placement of a minimum of 45 days. During the placement, you will work with your employer to develop your understanding of the sector and the jobs available within it. The placement will allow you to immerse yourself in the professional world and allow you to put your knowledge into practice, as well as reflecting on your experience so that you can really develop.
– Technical: Laboratory Sciences
This occupational specialism will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to enter employment or further study in your specific occupational area e.g. working as a laboratory technician.
The Core component is assessed by written examinations and an employer-set project. The combined results from these assessments will be aggregated to form the overall core component grade (A* to E and U).
The Occupational Specialism is assessed by a synoptic assignment. This assessment is graded as a distinction/merit/pass.
To be accepted onto this T-level programme, you must hold at least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above. This must include grade 5 in English and Maths.
You will need a Grade 5 in GCSE English, Maths and Science for this course, as well as at least two other GCSEs at Grade 4 or above.
Upon successful completion of this course, you may wish to move on to further education or full-time employment e.g.Science technician (laboratory technician).
