Science T Level
T Levels combine classroom theory, practical learning and a minimum 315-hour industry placement with an employer to make sure you have real experience of the workplace. The Technical Qualification (TQ) is the main classroom-based element of the T Level and will see you learn from a curriculum that has been shaped by industry experts. T Level courses have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that the content will meet the needs of industry and prepare you for work. They provide the knowledge and experience needed to open the door to highly skilled employment, an apprenticeship or higher-level study, including university.
The Science T Level is designed to develop the knowledge and behaviours needed for excellent scientific practice as well as developing your practical skills and includes two main components: the core (year one) and the occupational specialism (year two).
During the course you will study the following units:
– Working within the health and science sector
– Health, safety and environmental regulations
– Managing information and data
– Principles of good scientific and clinical practice
– Core science concepts including the structure of cells, tissues and large molecules, genetics, microbiology and immunology
– Understanding the science sector
– Further science knowledge, including cell cycle and cellular respiration, enzyme and protein structure, pathogens, classification of biological materials, kinetic changes and relevant analytical techniques
– Scientific methodology
– Experimental equipment and techniques
– Ethics of science
In your occupational specialism you will study Technical: Laboratory sciences. This will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to enter employment or further study in your specific occupational area e.g. working as a laboratory technician.
Alongside this core content, you will complete a work placement of a minimum of 315 hours. During the placement, you will work with your employer to develop your understanding of the sector and the jobs available within it. The placement will allow you to immerse yourself in the professional world and allow you to put your knowledge into practice, as well as reflecting on your experience so that you can really develop.

Assessments
The core component is assessed by written examinations and an employer-set project. The combined results from these assessments will be aggregated to form the overall core component grade (A* to E and U).
The occupational specialism is assessed by a synoptic assignment. This assessment is graded as a distinction/merit/pass.
Entry Requirements
You will need a Grade 5 in GCSE English, Maths and Science for this course, as well as at least two other GCSEs at Grade 4 or above.
Progression
Upon successful completion of this course, you may wish to move on to further education or full-time employment as a Science technician (e.g. food technologist, laboratory technician, metrology technician).

We have laboratory facilities for science-based learning, links to local employers, excellent online accessible resources for when you need to access learning remotely. You will be allocated a personal tutor who will support and guide you through the whole programme.

Q: Can I choose where I do my work placement?
A: You will need to work with an employer who can support this programme, so this will be discussed in conjunction with your tutor.
Q: What about support for my learning needs in placement?
A: We will work with the employers and yourself to make sure you are not disadvantaged by any learning needs e.g. dyslexia.
