Petroc Celebrates the Retirement of Long-Serving Lecturer Derek Jenkins

Petroc is proud to celebrate the remarkable career and well-earned retirement of one of its most dedicated and versatile educators, Derek Jenkins.
With over 25 years in further education, Derek’s legacy is defined by passion, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to his students.
A Journey of Growth and Innovation
Derek began his journey with the college, then North Devon College, in September 1999, initially supporting new teachers in their development, guiding them through observations and assessor training.
He soon transitioned into teaching Hairdressing and Barbering, where his talent for both practical instruction and student engagement quickly became clear.
Derek’s role evolved further with the introduction of Holistic Therapies to the curriculum. Under his leadership, the college became the first FE college in the South West to offer qualifications in Indian Head Massage.
His innovative approach and dedication led to his appointment as Lecturer in Charge of Holistic Therapies and Beauty Therapy, delivering a wide-ranging curriculum that included Holistic and Sports Therapies.
Derek later held senior positions including Head of the School of Lifestyle and Campus Manager at Tiverton, demonstrating his broad skillset and commitment to educational leadership.
Champion of Student Success
After returning to a teaching role, Derek continued to make a profound impact, both as a lecturer and as Programme Manager for Sports Therapy and Barbering.
His dedication to his students and his craft never faltered, and his ability to inspire learners across multiple disciplines earned him great respect among colleagues and learners alike, even winning the Teacher of the Year award at Petroc in 2024, a recognition that reflected the deep appreciation of his students and peers for his outstanding contributions to education.
A Legacy That Lasts
Throughout his career, Derek has been known for his warmth, professionalism, and enduring passion for teaching. Whether mentoring new educators, launching innovative therapies, or supporting learners in the salon or therapy suite, his influence has reached far and wide.
As Derek embarks on his retirement, the entire Petroc community celebrates a career filled with impact, care, and excellence.
Thank you, Derek Jenkins, for your decades of dedication, your inspirational teaching, and the legacy of learning you leave behind. You will be deeply missed.
