Students Set Sail for Success on Rona Sailing Expedition

Public Services students recently embarked on an unforgettable five-day sailing expedition with the Rona Sailing Project, gaining valuable life skills while crewing a yacht around the south coast.

The five-day, four-night voyage saw students take on the responsibilities of running a yacht, navigating a route from Southampton to the Isle of Wight, Portsmouth, Yarmouth and Cowes before returning to Southampton. Throughout the expedition, learners worked together as a crew, developing essential leadership, teamwork and communication skills in a unique and challenging environment.

Designed to support personal and social development, the experience encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones, build resilience and gain confidence while learning practical skills that will benefit them in future careers within the public services sector.

One of the students who took part, Jaime Mills, described the expedition as a rewarding experience, “It’s a great experience to try something new. If it’s on your to-do list, definitely do it. Cooking for the crew was my highlight.”

The trip proved such a success that four students have been invited back by the Rona Sailing Project to return as Watch Leaders, taking responsibility for leading and supporting a team on future voyages. A further eight students have also been invited to participate in the prestigious Tall Ships Race next year.

Matt Saunders, Public Services Lecturer at North Devon College, said, “The trip is not just about sailing; it’s about giving students the opportunity to develop valuable skills that will support their future careers in the public services. They return with greater confidence, improved communication skills and a stronger understanding of teamwork and leadership. Who knows where else we’ll go next year?”.
