Exciting New A Level Geology Course

We are thrilled to announce the introduction of A Level Geology – a dynamic and wide-ranging science course that invites students to uncover the extraordinary story of the planet beneath their feet.

Geology is the science of how the Earth works, how it formed, and how it continues to evolve. Far from being confined to the classroom, it sits at the heart of some of the most pressing challenges facing society today – from securing clean water and energy resources, to understanding climate change and protecting communities from natural hazards such as floods, earthquakes, landslides and volcanic activity.

The course is ideally suited to students with a curiosity about the natural world and an interest in applying scientific thinking to real problems. Drawing on elements of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, it appeals particularly to those who enjoy hands-on, practical learning and a problem-solving approach. Students will benefit from access to North Devon College’s fully equipped geology laboratory, as well as a varied and engaging programme of lectures, case studies, practical work and small group sessions.

The A Level covers a comprehensive range of topics, including the study of minerals, rocks and natural resources; surface and internal Earth processes; global tectonics and rock-forming processes; past life and past climates; and Earth materials and natural resources – giving students a thorough grounding in both the science and the real-world significance of our planet.

For students considering careers linked to the physical environment – whether in environmental science, engineering, energy, conservation or beyond – this qualification provides an outstanding foundation.
