Biography

What subject do you teach?

I teach English Literature and Media Studies.

What can students expect from these courses?

English Literature and Media Studies involve a lot of analytical skills. Students enrolling in September will be expected to understand how things are made – for example, how texts, poems and dramas are constructed, as well as advertising and marketing. They’ll also explore why people have created that material. It’s all about analysis, context and, most importantly, having a lot of fun!

What’s one skill every student will leave your subjects with?

I would say analytical writing. It’s the process of understanding how things are made, why they are made, and developing their own ideas and interpretations. It gives students the confidence to fully understand where they’re coming from and how they respond to texts as well.

What’s a top tip for students starting North Devon College in September?

Definitely ask questions – don’t be afraid to ask questions; that’s what we’re here for! Be open-minded because you’re entering a new place and a new college, so be open-minded about learning new things. And always bring a pen and paper!

If your subject had a theme song, what would it be?

I’ve gone a bit serious here and would say Miyazaki by Paris Paloma, which is all about valuing original art and creativity.

If the fire alarm was to go off, what is the one item you would take with you?

I would say my poster of Shakespeare that says, “I put the lit in literature!”
